George Allen collection

The records consist of photographs acquired or collected by George Allen and include the following: ca. 1730 nitrate negatives depicting early aerial photography of the B.C. lower mainland and Pacific west coast to Anyox, for the period 1926-1932. These photographs were taken by the photographer Stuart Thomson, also by Western Canada Airways/Pacific Airways Lt., precursors of Canadian Pacific Air; ca. 1150 negatives, both glass and nitrate, of views depicting Vancouver and area, Fraser River Valley, Victoria and Nanaimo, roads etc. taken in the 1920's and 1930's, all taken by professional photographers including Stuart Thomson, the Edwards Brothers, Richard Broadbridge and the Gowen Sutton Company. The collection also includes ca. 2570 nitrate negatives and contact prints of the Okanagan region, Vancouver Island, some of Banff, Calgary, Lethbridge, Winnipeg, and Quebec from ca. 1880 to 1950's. These photographs were mainly taken by photographer C.C. Wright while in the employ of Gowen Sutton, commercial producer of postcards. These photographs were acquired by George Allen in the 1950's and added to his collection.

Stephen Spender collection

The collection consists of a handwritten letter and a typed, signed letter to Maurice Wollman. Both letters are concerned with Wollman's proposed poetry anthology. In the letters, Spender refuses to allow any of his poems to be included. There is also a portrait etching of Spender by Edgar Holloway. It is number eight of seventy-five signed copies (by the artist). It is in the style of Holloway's etching of T.S. Eliot.

This collection consists of photocopied documents, mainly from the colonial period, relating to Comox District history. Dr. Pritchard organized the material into ten groupings and prefaced each with an introduction and remarks on the historical value of the documents.
The ten groupings are: 1) Records of Exploration 1791-1860, 2) Naval Records 1846-65, 3) Colonial Government Records 1862-71, 4) Anglican Records 1862-91, 5) Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition: Unpublished Journals 1864, 6) Euclataws, Settlers and the Navy 1863-65, 7) Liquor Traffic 1863-65, 8) Comox Natives: Some Reports and Descriptions 1860-90, 9) Province of British Columbia: Sessional Papers 1871-1910, 1918, 10) H M Laing: Comox Writings 1927-c. 1950.
Copies are from original manuscripts at various institutions including the British Columbia Archives, the British National Archives at Kew, the Hudson Bay Company Archives, and the Library at the University of Toronto.

Collection consists of records and photographs from activities of Tiny Tots and recreation classes taught by Margaret Blain at the Civic Centre on Second Avenue. Includes notes, the Civic Centre's Bylaws revised 6 Aug 1946, correspondence, a Pro-Rec Centres bulletin, membership cards, Civic Centre Program Bulletins, program lists, a Civic Centre leaders' handbook, book of enrollment, and attendance for programs. Photographs include the civic centre building, gymnastics, tiny tots, and staff including Don Forward, Neil Ross, Bob Moore, and Jack McIntosh. Other photographs depict Norman Baker and Emile Blain, Margaret's husband, and Emile and another employee inside Blain Brothers Grocers at 837 2nd Ave. West. Ephemera consists of a Prince Rupert General Hospital feeding schedule for Barbara Blain, a Reid's Holiday Tog. Ltd. for Miss M. Slin, a Pro-Rec winter schedule from 1946-1947, and a birth form from the Prince Rupert General Hospital, dated June 21, 1950.

It includes Jeanette McDonald (Mitchell) in the lobby of the Totem Theatre, concession stand and hallway of the Capitol Theatre, projectionist and proprietor of the Totem Theatre Johnny Garofani, interior seating area and projection rooms, and the totems that hung on the walls in the theatre.

The collection consists of mainly of correspondence. Most of the letters are from Dylan Thomas to John Lehmann, David (Tennent ?), G.V. Roberts and Clifford Dyment. Also included are letters from Daniel Jones and Vernon Watkins to (G.V.?) Roberts and from Denys (Kilham Roberts?) to Lehmann. The letters relate to personal activities and various literary matters. The other material is ephemera: a b/w postcard of the Augustus John portrait of Dylan Thomas, and a clipping of Thomas' obit. from The Tenby Observer and Country News, Nov. 18, 1953.

The others include 2 hls to W.R.. Fearon (1937), 3 pp re evidence given by Fearon in Henry Morris Sinclair's libel suit against Gogarty; 1 hls, 1 p to the President of the Irish Free State (11.09.38); 1 tls with h. additions, 3 pp to J.M.N. Jeffries (16.05.1933); 1 p h. with an 8 line comic verse about Hitler signed and dated 13.01.44; 1 tls., 1 p to "Seamus" (13.09.49); 1 tls. 2 pp to Mr. Smart (21.04.52). Also included is a holograph verse 6 pp. "To his Extraordinary Friend George Kennedy Allen Bell about to go to Switzerland," no date, on stationary headed "The Tower, Sandycove".
