J. Lewis Sangster fonds

This fonds consists of photographs and postcards taken or collected by J. Lewis Sangster during his time spent in New Westminster, during his time traveling and during his time spent overseas during World War I. Sangster developed a large number of the photographs himself, in a small cellar in his home that was converted into a darkroom. The fonds has been divided into three series based on content: Sangster Family, Military, and New Westminster Subjects. Included in the Military series, there is a collection of Canadian Official postcards published by the British newspaper The Daily Mirror, which Sangster collected during his time serving in World War I. The family series consists of photographs taken by Sangster of his family members, as well as pictures that Sangster received from extended family members.

Nine series include report cards, mementoes, receipts, permits, course notes, air raid literature, financial statements for the Rifle club, political correspondence, a statement of British Columbia Government policy, pamphlets, and school scribblers from his early life. Nine series include minutes and budgets from his Salmon Arm community involvement.

Fonds consists primarily of scrapbooks and photograph albums compiled by Gwen Anderson or received from various sources and all related to Henry Anderson's political career, and to the Andersons' involvement in community organizations and events in Richmond. The scrapbooks and albums document Richmond's growth and development during Anderson's time in office, and reflect the commitment both Henry and Gwen Anderson felt toward their community. Also included in the fonds are memorabilia related to Anderson's time in office, including slide photographs of various Richmond scenes, pamphlets related to events he and his wife attended, and a sound recording of opening ceremonies at the Richmond Imperial Oil service centre. These appear to have been set aside by Gwen Anderson. In addition, the fonds includes one file of ephemeral items, such as Ladner ferry tickets, unmarked ballot sheets and a building permit, and three oil paintings given as gifts to the Andersons. Fonds is arranged in four series: 1. Scrapbooks and albums; 2. Paintings; 3. Reeve Anderson memorabilia; 4. Ephemera.

Collection consists of digital copies of a complete run of The Pedestal, a feminist periodical published by the Vancouver Women's Caucus and edited by the Pedestal collective. The periodical referred to itself as a women's liberation newspaper and later as a lesbian-feminist newspaper; it published non-fiction, personal stories, poetry, reviews, letters to the editor, news of the women's movement, informational resources, a dream page and a calendar of events. It was distributed to individual subscribers, women's groups and sold by members at demonstrations and political events, and was available at bookstores and other locations around Vancouver. The Pedestal engaged in debates with members and readers over homosexuality, socialism and relationships with men, and addressed political issues such as abortion, childcare, education, anti-imperialism and patriarchy.

Contributors include Liz Briemberg, Colette Connor, Deb Dubelko, Susan Dubrofsky, Pat Feindel, Barb Finlayson, Eileen Hausfather, Pat Hoffer, Nym Hughes, Beth Jankola, Sylvia Lindstrom, Judi Morton, Jean Rands, Anne Roberts, Diane Schrenk, Sharon Stevenson, Marcy Toms and Dodie Weppler.

Volume VI, Numbers 3 and 4 were published under the title Women Can.

The fonds consists of records relating to the life of W.A.C. Bennett. Documented are his personal life, business ventures, community service, club affiliations, and political activities, including his terms as Member of the Legislative Assembly for South Okanagan, and as Premier of British Columbia.

Personal records consist of early correspondence and household records, as well as material which documents W.A.C. Bennett's association with freemasonry and his fundraising activities with organizations such as the Salvation Army.

Business records consist of material relating to Bennett Hardware, Bennett’s Stores, and Calona Wines.

Political records refer to Bennett's tenure as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for South Okanagan, as Premier and as leader of the Opposition. Also relevant are records referring to the passage of a number of Municipal Acts and Bennett’s relationship with Federal politics.

The fonds consists of research material acquired by Peter Poole in the course of preparing his thesis and an earlier essay on the solidarity movement. The fonds includes taped interviews of trade union leaders, solidarity movement leaders, community activists, and legal counsel. Twenty-six of the interviews are transcribed. The fonds also includes newspapers and newsclippings, essays, publications, flyers, research notes, ephemera, a chronology of the solidarity movement, and a copy of Peter Poole's thesis.

Fonds is comprised of research material gathered by David Mitchell for his book, W.A.C. Bennett and the Rise of British Columbia and records generated in the process of completing work on the book. The research material concentrates on Bennett's life as a political figure, the rise of the Social Credit Party, and political issues dealt with by the Bennett government.

It includes a mix of interviews with Bennett and other important political figures of his era, articles, clippings, government documents, Social Credit Party papers, copies of Bennett's personal papers, Mitchell's notes and rough drafts, academic papers, graphic material, and correspondence.

Also includes materials about the resettlement project that B.C. Hydro carried out during the Columbia River Project. The second series is of images of a reception of a $5000 grant from the city of Vancouver to the Redress Committee, Vancouver City Hall, Vancouver, BC. The third series is of images of a Japanese Canadian Community Facility fund raising dinner; Vancouver, BC. The fourth series is of images of the JCCA Board of Directors; Vancouver, BC. The fifth series is an image of Art Miki and Brian Mulroney signing the Japanese Canadian Redress agreement at Ottawa, Ont. The sixth is an image of a Buddhist memorial service. The seventh series is of two photograph albums belonging to Kazuo Miki containing photographs of the Haney, BC, the Asahi baseball team, miscellaneous outdoor portraits and miscellaneous photographs of social gatherings, most of which were photographed during the 1920s and 1930s. The eighth series is of a group portraits belonging to Shizuko Miki. The ninth series is of photographs of Japanese Canadians in Slocan, BC during World War Two. The tenth series is of photographs of Japanese Canadians meeting with government officials and people at a booth providing information about the Japanese Canadian Internment. The eleventh series is of group portraits of Japanese Canadian groups and organizations. The twelfth series is of educational material pertaining to Japanese Canadians and the Japanese Canadian Internment. The thirteenth series is of pamphlets and postcards pertaining to Japanese Canadians and the Redress. The fourteenth series is of reports and publications that advocate for the Japanese Canadian Redress and provide information about the Japanese Canadian Internment. The fifteenth series is of newsletters and news publications relating to the Japanese Canadian Redress settlement. The sixteenth series is of cassette tapes surrounding historical tours and reactions to the Redress and Official apology by the Government of Canada to Japanese Canadians.
