The fonds consists of records generated by the Colonial Secretary of the Colony of British Columbia while fulfilling the role of secretariat for government of the colony. It also includes records created by gold commissioners in Hope, Rock Creek, Lytton, and Cariboo who reported to the Colonial Secretary from 1859 to 1871. Types of records include letterbooks, indexes to correspondence, correspondence inward and outward, account books, indentures, and indexes to proclamations and ordinances.

Columbian Company fonds

The fonds consists of a collection of reference files created by Columbian staff members over a number of years. The files were accessed by staff members to provide information about a given person or subject. The content of these files is predominately black and white photographic prints and associated newspaper clippings. There are also other types of documents in the files such as pamphlets, circulars, assignment sheets, and memos. The fonds contains five series: People Files, Subject Files, and Sports Files, Sports Mug Shots, and New Westminster Today Photos. These records are sorted alphabetically except for the New Westminster Today photos which are filed chronologically.

The fonds consists of a bound, handwritten transcribed copy of Robert Haswell's log of the Columbia, which chronicles two trips of her sister ship, the sloop Washington, to the vicinity of the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1789. The fonds also includes a photostatic copy of Captain Robert Gray's log for the Columbia in 1791. It records voyages along the northwest coast of Washington State and British Columbia.
