Aerial and construction photographs collection

The collection consists of photographic prints and contact sheets that illustrate the physical development of SFU including site clearance, excavation, the construction of individual buildings, and completed buildings and interiors. There are a number of aerial photographs. The collection also includes photographs of the University's opening ceremonies and the installation of Dr. Shrum as Chancellor and Patrick McTaggart-Cowan as President. The collection consists of seven series: Herbert L. McDonald photographs, 1963-1965; Leonard Frank photographs, 1964-1967; George Allen Ltd. photographs, 1963-1978; John Fulker photographs, [1965?]; Herb Nott and Co. photographs, 1966; Rolly Ford photograph, 1965; and Miscellaneous aerial photographs, [196-].

The fonds consists of the shipping record book at Union Bay (1918-1937), letterbooks and correspondence of the General Manager at Nanaimo (1920-1921, 1935-1948), coal production record book for Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. (1953), and record books of the companies operations at the Comox Mines, including employment record book (1934-1954), incorporating wage agreements, a powerhouse visitors register, mining supplies ledger (1943-1946), and a payroll record book (1952). Fonds include two volumes of photographs of the Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) ltd. produced by Leonard Frank. Fonds also includes maps and plans of company mining activities in Cumberland and shipping activities at Union Bay and Ladysmith, including building, railway and mine plans as well as survey maps for the Comox Valley area (including Comox Lake).

The fonds consists of records from three distinct sources: the Leonard Frank Photo Studio, the Frank family , and the Landauer family. The records of Leonard Frank Photo Studio constitute those that remained after the closure of the business in 1983. They consist of photographs and textual records. The photographs cover many significant events and developments in British Columbia's history. Their major subject areas include logging, lumbering, mining, fishing and transportation; the construction of bridges and buildings in the Vancouver area; famous people; aboriginal peoples; and scenic views of mountainous, coastal, and urban areas. The photographs were taken by Leonard Frank and Otto Landauer. The textual records consist of photographic FindingAids, business correspondence, financial records, and historical and reference material. The records of the Frank family consist of the personal papers of Leonard and Bernard Frank. The records of the Landauer family consist of the personal papers of Otto Landauer and members of his family.
