Ralph Thistle fonds

The fonds consists mainly of the diary of Lieutenant Thistle, Area Intelligence Officer, Prince Rupert, B.C. (Dec. 7,1941-June 30, 1942). In the diary he mentions the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the consequent U.S. entry into the war. He later refers to the effect this event has upon defence operations on the northern B.C. coast and mentions the "roundup" of Japanese fishing boats. Also included in the fonds is a copy of a report that he and Major Dow sent to their Officer Commanding, on Feb. 6, 1942. They have it marked "Secret". Dr. R.H. Roy published an article based on the diary in B.C. Studies (No.31, Autumn 1976).

The collection consists of a typewritten letter to Alan Brilliant (Unicorn Press), together with its envelope. In the letter, he mentions Dudek, Gnarowski, Siebrasse, and Gabrielle Roy. Also included is a copy of a mailer for Everson's book “The dark is not so dark”, with Everson's handwritten instructions inside.

Wyatt, writing from India, to his wife, Jane, "Jeanie" in Aberdeen. There are 77 letters plus a note: "Maude's Battery at the Relief of Lucknow 25 Set. 1857. By Lt. Col. M.E.S. Laws. OBE. M.C. R.A. (ret'd.) Taken from the R.A. Journal, July, 1953", 6 pp. The second is "Military Memories: Part I. First World War,1914-19; Part II. Mesopotamia, Egypt, Turkey, 1919-23; Part III. The fonds consists of correspondence generated in course of business along with invoices and inventories. Some correspondence, such as that of Kathleen Raine, includes extended exchanges beyond that required for business purposes. Additionally, some manuscript material acquired by the business is included: i.e. Patrick Creagh, Derek Mahon, and Patrick McCartan's typescripts of letters from W. B. Yeats and Oliver St. John Gogarty.

The collection consists of a sketchbook with drawings largely of churches, country houses, and other architectural subjects. It includes a few loose and pasted-in sketches at the back. There is a poem of unknown derivation under the first sketch in the book, preceded by an index to 62 sketches dated 1821-1824. Later sketches are pasted in or loose.

The collection consists of autograph manuscript of The Great Hunger and Self-Portrait. The Great Hunger is 58 recto pages on 23x18 cm sheets. The poem is a fair copy that has some corrections; it was first published by the Cuala Press, 1942. Self-portrait is in a lined 20x16 cm notebook on 31 recto pages and titled “Patrick Kavanagh 1962 Self-Portrait”; some words are corrected.

Panama maps collection

The collection consists of three maps: 1) Hacke's “Draft of the Golden & adjacent islands with part of ye Isthmus of Darien as it was taken by Captain Ienefer where ye Scots West-India Company setteled” plus Hacke & Morden's “New Map of Ye Isthmus of Darien in America”; 2) “A Map of Part of the Isthmus of Darien, shewing the communication with Panama, from Portobello & Chagre both by land, and by water”; 3) “Rade du Darien et les Isles Voisines”. Maps 1 and 3 relate to the Darién scheme, an attempt by Scotland to establish a colony called 'New Caledonia' on the Isthmus of Panama at the end of the 17th century (1698-1699). It was poorly managed and many colonists succumbed to disease. It was abandoned after a siege by Spanish forces in April 1700.

Fearon (1937), 3 pp re evidence given by Fearon in Henry Morris Sinclair's libel suit against Gogarty; 1 hls, 1 p to the President of the Irish Free State (11.09.38); 1 tls with h. additions, 3 pp to J.M.N. Jeffries (16.05.1933); 1 p h. with an 8 line comic verse about Hitler signed and dated 13.01.44; 1 tls., 1 p to "Seamus" (13.09.49); 1 tls. 2 pp to Mr. Smart (21.04.52). Also included is a holograph verse 6 pp. "To his Extraordinary Friend George Kennedy Allen Bell about to go to Switzerland," no date, on stationary headed "The Tower, Sandycove".
