Charles S. Brant fonds

Fonds documents Brant’s pre-doctoral research in Burma. As a Fulbright scholar working with the United States Educational Foundation, Brant submitted quarterly reports to the foundation detailing his arrival and adjustment to life in Burma, as well as his sociological research in the community of Tadagale and other areas of the country. Brant also provided the U.S. Foreign Service with his observations of life in the Shan States, where Brant and his wife first lived when they arrived in Burma in 1949. After returning to the United States in 1950, Brant published articles on the research he completed while in Burma. Records in this series include academic and government reports; articles; Brant’s curriculum vitae; a digitized slide show and 8 mm movie; a grant application; notes; and photographic negatives and prints. It is likely that most of the photographs were taken by Jane Brant, but these are not identified.

Gordon and Louanne Houston fonds

During their time living in Bella Bella, the Houstons took many photographs of the lives of the Heiltsuk First Nation community documenting the day-to-day lives of the Heiltsuk First Nation as well as ceremonial activities. The color slides document the construction, painting, and launching of the Gi’wa, a Heiltsuk canoe which sailed with the Lootaas, the Haida canoe built by Bill Reid for Expo 86. Some of the slides document the welcome feast at Bella Bella in honor of the Haida crew of the Lootaas. The color slides also document several potlatches and wedding feasts held in the community hall, and the local Sports Day parade. Slides also depict the role of the fishing in the community, such as smoking salmon and processing roe. Other photos document gravestones on a nearby cemetery island, derelict canneries, petroglyphs and pictographs, totem poles and house posts, all in or near Bella Bella.

John Webber fonds

Fonds consists of matted prints of engravings made from sketches created by John Webber as official artist on Captain James Cook’s third voyage. Prints depict landscapes, animals, people, clothing styles, architecture, and events that were encountered on the voyage in places such as New Zealand, the Friendly Islands (Tonga), the Sandwich Islands (the Hawaiian Islands), Nootka Sound (Vancouver Island, BC), and Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania).

The fonds consists of records Telfer created or received during the time that she spent as a teacher at residential schools. It include correspondence, essays, schedules, programs, ephemera notes and a significant number of photographs. These records are primarily related to the Morely School, the Coqueeletza School and the Port Alberni Residential School, as well as the Nakoda (Stoney) Nation.

Thomas and Mildred Laurie collection

The collection includes material relating to Alert Bay that was created or collected by Thomas and Mildred Laurie, as well as photographs and textual records created or received by James Barclay Williams, who bequeathed the records to Mildred Laurie. The collection includes a photo album, photographs, postcards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and a calendar. Photographs document Alert Bay and the surrounding area, including the B.C. Packers store, Christ Church, the native cemetery, St. Michael’s Residential School and Preventorium, Canada Packers, Hardy Bay, totem poles, a long house, and the Nimpkish Hotel. Photographs also document local events, including potlatches, weddings, an outdoor salmon barbeque, BC centenary celebrations in 1958, native ceremonies, and a visit by the Governor General.

Bob Kingsmill fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence, questionnaires, and photographs relating to Bob Kingsmill’s research for his book A Catalogue of British Columbia Potters (1978). In order to gather material for his book, Kingsmill created a questionnaire requesting information and photographs, which he sent to about 70 potters throughout British Columbia. The fonds consists mainly of the responses Kingsmill received, which include the completed questionnaires containing short biographical and artistic statements by each potter, together with black and white or colour photographs of the artists and their pottery.

Harry B. Hawthorn fonds

The fonds consists of records created and collected by Harry B. Hawthorn in a number of different capacities: as researcher, professor, Dean of Anthropology and Director of the Museum of Anthropology. Textual records in the fonds include correspondence, transcripts, research notes and clippings from publications. Much of the graphic materials relate to Harry Hawthorn’s interactions with aboriginal communities as an anthropologist, a professor, and as the Director of MOA. Other images relate to his personal life, documenting his youth in New Zealand, his life as a father and anthropologist, and his later established professional roles.

Darrin Morrison fonds

Fonds consists of material related to Morrison’s involvement with several exhibits at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, as well as his work planning and implementing preventative conservation measures, and his work design the Museum Research Centre. The fonds consists of one series of Exhibitions with sub-series corresponding to separate exhibits. Another series consists of information on a book on textiles and costumes. The last series consists of information about building projects that Morrison was involved with. Material consists of correspondence, handwritten notes, exhibit catalogs, poster and invitation proofs, budgets, slides, copy and 35 mm negatives, floppy disks, project descriptions, postcards, video cassettes and artist histories.

Kersti Krug fonds

The fonds reflects Kersti Krug’s work on several major projects relating to organizational change and development at the University of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology (MOA). Records created during Krug’s period as Director of Communications relate predominantly to surveys and studies conducted with members of, and visitors to, the Museum. Records Krug created in her capacity as co-director of MOA’s Certificate in Museum Studies Program illustrate the development of the program and its curriculum, and also its cancellation. As Manager of Research and Evaluation, Krug was involved in the initial stages of the MOA building expansion; records she produced during this period illustrate her consultative approach to assessing MOA’s space needs and her solicitation of proposals from architectural firms.

Records produced during these activities include proposals, questionnaires, interview transcriptions, data sets, graphs and charts, notes, drafts, and reports, draft curricula, copies of email correspondence, syllabi, research materials, and brochures.

Exhibit Comment Books and Guest Registers/Guest Books collection

This collection is comprised of comment books generated from exhibits held at the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at the University of British Columbia. At each exhibit, a book is available in which viewers are welcome to write down their opinions about what they saw. The comment books are collections of the public’s opinions about exhibits held at MOA.

The fonds consists of slides collected by Dr. Kew in the course of curating the exhibition Visions of Power, Symbols of Wealth: Central Coast Salish Sculpture and Engraving. The fonds is divided into the following series: Central Coast Salish Art Inventory ([1978]-1979), and Visions of Power, Symbols of Wealth Exhibition (1980). It also contains reports, memos, minutes and correspondence relating to the Ways and Means Committee.
