St. Ann's Academy (Victoria, B.C.) fonds

The fonds consists of textual records of the St. Ann's Academy local house, including four sous-fonds. The first two belong to the Superior and the Bursar; the third was generated by the Commercial Department of the school; and the fourth belongs to the Treasurer who kept the accounts of the St. Ann's Secondary School next door to the Academy in the 1960s and 1970s. Each of these officers maintained records in the course of their respective duties until the Academy and secondary school were finally closed and all activities ceased by 1975. Given that the primary function of this local house was education, the fonds consists mainly of school records as well as some house accounts, and other records. The school records and even general house records tend to follow the pattern of the school year from August/September to June/July. Records divide into series and sometimes subseries of files. They include account books known by their French name comptes-rendus, student registers, receipts and expenses, boarders' accounts, commercial accounts, day scholar accounts, payroll ledgers, council minutes, names and addresses of students, alumni records, and other miscellaneous material.

The fonds consists of 6 files of research material used in the production of Sedgwick's master of arts thesis concerning the Chinese community in Victoria, B.C.: The Context of Economic Change and Continuity in an Urban Overseas Chinese Community. The fonds includes photographs not reproduced in the thesis, and transcriptions of interviews with members of the Chinese community that include recollections of family, neighbours, neighbourhoods, and local businesses.

The fonds consists of records relating to his career as a journalist and to his family life in Victoria. It has been arranged in two series, Autobiography and Writing. The Autobiography series consists of Archies autobiographical works, which document his service in World War I and his family life and career. It has been arranged into three sub-series: All in A Lifetime, My Life in the Army, and Travel. The Writing series consists of his published and unpublished work, and background material for it. The series shows his interest in making new generations of Victoria residents aware of their citys history and aware of World War I history. It has been arranged into two sub-series: Articles and Stories, and Broadcasts. Records include typed manuscripts, clippings of Archies published articles, photographs including photograph albums, diaries, scrapbooks, war medals, and ephemera.
