George Allen collection

The records consist of photographs acquired or collected by George Allen and include the following: ca. 1730 nitrate negatives depicting early aerial photography of the B.C. lower mainland and Pacific west coast to Anyox, for the period 1926-1932. These photographs were taken by the photographer Stuart Thomson, also by Western Canada Airways/Pacific Airways Lt., precursors of Canadian Pacific Air; ca. 1150 negatives, both glass and nitrate, of views depicting Vancouver and area, Fraser River Valley, Victoria and Nanaimo, roads etc. taken in the 1920's and 1930's, all taken by professional photographers including Stuart Thomson, the Edwards Brothers, Richard Broadbridge and the Gowen Sutton Company. The collection also includes ca. 2570 nitrate negatives and contact prints of the Okanagan region, Vancouver Island, some of Banff, Calgary, Lethbridge, Winnipeg, and Quebec from ca. 1880 to 1950's. These photographs were mainly taken by photographer C.C. Wright while in the employ of Gowen Sutton, commercial producer of postcards. These photographs were acquired by George Allen in the 1950's and added to his collection.

Louise Stein Sorensen fonds

Fonds consists of textual records, graphic materials, and artefacts relating to Louise Sorensen’s life in the Netherlands, some of which was spent in hiding. Many of the items are wartime records, including photographs and negatives, correspondence, paper currency, drawings, notice of registration, official and forged identity cards, and ration cards. Additionally, the fonds contains copies of Sorensen’s great-uncle’s daughter’s, Ans’, testimonies; several English translations of items provided by Sorensen; and a 1947 second edition of Anne Frank’s Het Achterhuis, or The Diary of a Young Girl, also known as the Diary of Anne Frank. The fonds has been arranged by the archivist into the following six series: Personal records, Family records, Photographs, Correspondence, Currency and Publications and writings.

Collection consists of articles, lectures, correspondence, newspaper clippings and other textual material produced and collected by John Conway relating to the life, activity and legacy of Dr. Rudolf Vrba, a Slovak Jewish Holocaust survivor escaped from Auschwitz and associate professor of pharmacology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. Collection includes audiovisual records related to Vrba from the VHEC’s institutional holdings.

Collection has been arranged into the following series: Vierteljahrshefre für Zeitgelchichte documents series (1997–2010); Vrba memorial lecture series (2006–2014); Biographical material series (1987–2010); Correspondence and research records series (2004–2007); and Articles and lectures series (1992–2013).

Collection is comprised of records accumulated as a result of the participation of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in a project entitled Writing Lives: The Holocaust Survivor Memoir Project. Writing Lives was a partnership between Langara College’s English and History departments, the Azrieli Foundation and the VHEC. For the project, students at Langara College worked closely with Vancouver-based Holocaust survivors to produce their written memoirs over the course of two semesters. In the first semester, students learned the history of the Holocaust. In the second semester, students interviewed survivors, transcribed the interviews and together with the survivors, completed written memoirs. In this fonds are the memoirs, administrative files and digital photographs produced during the two-year run of the project. Seven survivors participated in the first year of the project, from 2016–2017; five survivors participated in the second year of the project, from 2017 to 2018.

Collection is divided into three series: Memoirs (2017–2018), Administrative files (2016–2018) and Photographs (2017–2018).

Iza Laponce collection

Collection is comprised of writings by Polish Holocaust survivor Iza Laponce and identity cards belonging to Helena and Stanislaw Fiszhaut, the couple who adopted Iza Laponce. Writings are parts one and two of Laponce's memoir and a draft of an article on the subject of Jews in wartime Warsaw.

Loewy postcard collection

Collection is comprised of twenty-eight postcards written by Sylvia Loewy, in Stockholm, Sweden, to her husband, Fritz, after his 1942 arrest and deportation. Not knowing where her husband was, Sylvia sent the postcards by registered mail to shtetls, ghettos and concentration camps throughout the Polish General Government territory. The postcards were sent in batches with similar messages, explaining that she lives in Sweden, that she is fine, and that she hopes to receive news from her husband as soon as possible.

Collection is comprised of original photographs and photo postcards of Shoshana Fidelman’s grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts and siblings, none of whom survived the Holocaust. Photographs were taken in Poland prior to the Second World War and mailed by Shoshana Fidelman’s family living in Starachowice-Wierzbnik and Bodzentyn to family members in Canada and Israel.

Collection is comprised of photographs taken by Canadian aircraftman and photographer Fred Thompson in locations in Germany, Belgium, England and the Netherlands in 1945, at the end of the Second World War. Photographs depict military personnel and aircraft, liberated slave labourers, street scenes, bombed buildings, shipwrecks, Bergen-Belsen atrocities and other scenes witnessed by the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Air Force as part of military operations in northwest Europe.

Collection is comprised of items related to and about the activities of Anna Helen (née Mahler) Aszkanazy in Vienna, Austria and North Vancouver, BC. Items are original memoir writings by Aszkanazy, written in British Columbia both in German and English, an English translation of the German-language memoir part, a German writers association membership card and photographs taken before the Second World War and after Aszkanazy’s immigration to BC. Photographs depict Aszkanazy, her daughter, friends and refugees whom she helped immigrate to Canada during the Second World War.

Collection is comprised of Nazi-era printed ephemera, photographs and a Hitler Youth dagger collected by Royal Canadian Engineer Robert Brown, who served in the Second World War. Postcards and cigarette cards document Nazi party activities and personnel, bombs, the German retreat from the Netherlands and other subjects.
