May Ellingsen fonds

Fonds consists of ten photograph albums compiled and annotated by May Ellingsen. The albums contain both original and reproduced photographs of Cortes Island and nearby islands, including Twin Islands and Hernando Island. They are accompanied by captions and additional textual information such as pre-emption records, reminiscences and newspaper clippings. Most of the photographs date from the early decades of the 20th century, depicting homes and buildings, pioneer families, community activities, schools, wharves, boats, logging and marine activity. Fonds consists of two series: Series 1 (The May Ellingsen Historic Photograph Collection, Vol. 1-9, Accession 2004.002) and Series 2 (The Manson Family Album, Accession 2004.003).

Subject files include accounts, correspondence, minutes, 1913 constitution, resolutions, inventory of artifacts, photographs of the 1974 move of the Bastion to the present location, and ephemera.

Fonds consists of images of the 1960 fire that razed most of Chinatown. June Leahy, who took all the colour slides, used one of the earliest SLR Pentax cameras while Bill Leahy, who took most of the black and white photographs, used a Leica camera. The photographs of the day after the fire were taken by June. The Leahys were friends with RCMP Staff Sergeant Earle Sarsiat who notified Bill Leahy of the fire; the Leahys were on site soon after the fire was reported.

Collection consists of photographs and wallpaper samples taken by Nanaimo Community Archives staff during renovations to Beban House in 1996. Beban House was built in the 1930s by Frank Beban. Beban arrived in Nanaimo from his native New Zealand around 1908 and worked in the mines. He made his wealth, however, as a sawmill owner. Beban House was built on 160 acres in Northfield and cost $25,000. Today, the house is used by Tourism Nanaimo and other community organizations. Photographs are views of the upstairs portion only of Beban House.

Collection consists of pen and ink drawings of the following: 610 Selby Street (Beck Residence); 755 Terminal Avenue (Wardill Residence); 28 Front Street (Tom Brown's Autobody); detail of 28 Front Street; 102 Fry Street Young Residence); 2 images of the Miner's Cottage known as the Rowbottom Residence (at 100 Cameron Road); St. Paul's Church; 279 Selby Street (Gilbert Residence) detail; 17 Church Street (Great National Land Building) detail; 673 Selby Street (Sullivan Residence) detail; 133 Milton (Wood Residence) detail; an Eagle's Hall detail; a doodle that appears to be a likeness of a petroglyph; and two homes on Cranberry Avenue. The drawings were created by Hofman for the Heritage Commission's publication Columns, Cornices and Coal (1998).

The fonds comprises the business records of Sharp & Thompson – later Thompson, Berwick, Pratt & Partners – dating from 1912 to 1974. The records consist of signed contracts, specifications, minutes, correspondence, quotations, financial statements, reports, signed Forms of Tender, memoranda, photographs and architectural drawings. They document the planning for and construction of the University of British Columbia buildings designed and overseen by the architectural firm, and also document the architectural firm's activities on buildings in Vancouver, the province of British Columbia and elsewhere. Some of the files represent unsuccessful bids on jobs. There are original, blueprint and ozalid architectural drawings in this collection. The drawings of University buildings consist mainly of original drawings and blueprints. The drawings of buildings in Vancouver and elsewhere are few in number and are mostly ozalid reproductions.
