Part of Limners fonds

This series consists of publications and graphic material by and about members of the Victoria Limners Society.

Included in this series are three different editions of the publication “The Limners” published by Pharos Press in 1972, 1978 and 1981 which was sold at Limners exhibitions and elsewhere. These booklets begin with an introduction by Robin Skelton on the Limners as a whole, then turns to describing each artist individually, with a sketch of each artist made by Myfanwy Pavelic, a short biography, and an image of one of the artist’s works. This series also contains a print proof of a 1967 monograph called Inscriptions written by Robin Skelton with drawings by Herbert Siebner. Additionally, several newspaper clippings related to the Limners can be found in this series.

Amongst the graphic materials are photographs and promotional material such as posters and invitations to Limner exhibitions. Twenty photographs can be in this series including photographs showing various Limner exhibitions and events, including the inaugural Limner exhibition at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in 1973, Max Bates’ birthday party in 1974. Some of these images also appear in Patricia Bovey’s book on the Limners, A Passion for Art: The Art and Dynamics of the Limners.

• 29 November 1973: Eaton’s Art Gallery, solo exhibition, 13 sold. No further correspondence
• Galerie Royale. Nelson Skalbania, owner, Vic Hay, manager, 7th and Granville, Vancouver. This gallery opened with considerable prestige but was in business a short time.
o 16 December 1974: 42 paintings consigned, 13 sold
o 16 June 1976: 12 paintings sold, 22 withdrawn from inventory, no further correspondence
• Artique Limited, owned by Jean Shadrach, 314 G Street, Anchorage Alaska. Harrison had a show in Anchorage 17-30 July, 1977.
o 1977: 23 paintings consigned
• Assinaboia Gallery, 2312 111 Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan. A very small file noting only one sale.
o 27 July 1982: one painting sold
• Diane Farris Limited. A sporadic correspondence seems to indicate that Harrison knew Farris outside this business relationship. When he concluded the association he noted that business and friendship should not be mixed. This is a short and incomplete file.
o 27 July 1982 – consigned 8 paintings
o 17 November 1982 – decided that the business was culminated
o 25 March 1988 – apparently a reprise of relations

File consists of correspondence with Tundra Books. Harrison signed a contract on 14 January 1977 with May Cutler of Tundra Books of Montreal for Children of the Yukon. On 19 of January 1978 Collins Books bought 10,000 copies. During April 1978 it was shown in the Illustrators’ Exhibition of the Children’s Book Fair at the Bologna, Italy.

File contains items related to the following:
• 22 January 1982: contract signed with Tundra for A Northern Alphabet. Both it and Children of the Yukon were reprinted by 17 November 1983.
• 31 October 1985: in discussion with Brian Macfarlane regarding a book about the 1909 Stanley Cup and the Yukon team, scheduled for 1987. This book was never completed.
• 6 May 1986: TH and Cutler disagreed about Harrison’s proposed publication of The Cremation of Sam McGee with Kids Can Press. By 31 October 1986 they had broken off relations.
• 28 February 1987: Tundra published an small format edition of A Northern Alphabet for Scholastic Books.
• 28 February 1988: statement of royalties, last communication in file.

Stuart Baker fonds

The fonds consists of five series: Personal Life, Pre-Totem Theatre Involvement, Totem Theatre, Post-Totem Theatre Involvement and the Arngrim Family series. These series document Baker’s involvement in the Canadian theatre scene over a period of time spanning approximately thirty years, as well as certain aspects of his personal life. The fonds consists primarily of photographs and slides, both professional and private; they are largely unidentified. Also included are three scrapbooks of drama clippings of Vancouver productions, 1948-1951, theatre posters, programs, memorabilia and several letters.

Personal Life series includes photographs, slides and home movies accumulated by Baker that relate to family, friends and trips abroad.

Pre-Totem Theatre Involvement series documents Baker’s involvement in Canadian theatre from the late 1940s until 1951, and is comprised of photographic material.

Totem Theatre series documents extensively Baker’s involvement with the Totem Theatre company between 1951 and 1954. The series encompasses not only the administrative and promotional side of Totem Theatre, but also the production and staging side. The series includes administrative and promotional material as well as photographs and an extensive collection of newspaper clippings.

Post-Totem Theatre Involvement series documents Baker’s involvement with North American theatre between 1954 and the late 1970s, and includes an extensive collection of slides, photographs and newspaper clippings. The Education sub-series documents Baker’s involvement with drama and summer theatre schools.

Arngrim Family series consists of documents accumulated by Baker that relate to the family of his friend, Thor Arngrim and include photographs, slides and sound recordings. Arngrim married Totem Theatre actress Nora MacMillan in 1954 after the demise of the theatre company, and as such, some materials relating to her later work can also be found within this series.

The fonds has one subseries: the Education sub-series found within the Post-Totem Theatre Involvement series.

This series consists of records related to Lyons' activities as an author, including book-length publications, newspapers and magazine articles, and covers the period of the early 1950s until his death. Lyons typically addressed British Columbia history, botany, wildlife, parks, and other related topics in his writings. This series includes manuscripts and monographs by Lyons with extensive handwritten revisions. It also contains botanical drawings used to illustrate Lyons' field guides, as well as research notes, newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, dust jackets, brochures, pamphlets, reports, photographs, slides, and other textual records pertaining to Lyons' publications. This series consists of three subseries: 1) monographs; 2) field guide illustrations; and 3) newspapers and magazines.

The fonds consists of material relating to Lyons's work as a BC Parks developer, botanist, author, lecturer, independent documentary filmmaker, wildlife photographer, and world traveller.
