The fonds consists mainly of two groups of records. One group was created as a result of Dr. E.J.Curtis' interest in the genealogy of the McKee family. The other is a compilation of material, some of which was arranged in 3 albums (see conservation note), that describes the activities and accomplishments of Edwin Johnson Curtis, his parents, and his children. The fonds includes photographs, correspondence, certificates, research notes, family trees, newspaper clippings and ephemera. The photographs contain many family portraits, scenes of early Ladner and Lowe Inlet, and depictions of family activities and holidays. Dr. Curtis corresponded with archives, genealogical organizations, and family members to obtain records and information about the family of his mother Isabella McKee, compiling this information in detailed handdrawn family trees. Original records include certificates of various family members' birth, death, marriage and accomplishments, and records of Dr. Curtis' war service, education, memberships, and professional competency and appointments.

Among other types of records, the fonds includes: drafts of Duke's articles, essays and speeches; personal and production photographs; annotated working scripts of various television and film productions; personal and administrative correspondence; legal records, personal and administrative correspondence pertaining to the takeover of CKVU-TV; awards; personal notes; journals; press clippings featuring work by and about Duke; ephemera collected by Duke; and audio/visual material.

Series have been determined during archival processing and are primarily based on the various activities that Duke engaged in over his life and working career (see the Arrangement note below for more details about series arrangement). The fonds consists of the records of David H. Flaherty created throughout his professional and private life. They include project research files relating to his work with Canadian and international privacy issues during his time at the University of Western Ontario from 1972 to 1987; teaching and lecture files on early American history, and American and Canadian legal and constitutional history from his time at Princeton, the University of Virginia and the University of Western Ontario from 1963 to 1991; and his personal files including diaries, correspondence, photographs and subject files from 1949 to 2005, including those from his time as the Information and Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia. Within each series, the files are arranged roughly by date. The personal files have been divided by Flaherty into open and restricted files.
