Williams was a black jazz pianist and arranger-composer, who is often regarded as the only significant female instrumentalist in jazz. She was an important "swing" pianist with a distinctively understated, legato manner based on subtly varied stride and boogie-woogie bass patterns. She was also a major exponent of postwar modern jazz, and advanced the careers of many younger magicians.
