CA VHEC RA036 · Collection · 2016–2018

Collection is comprised of records accumulated as a result of the participation of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in a project entitled Writing Lives: The Holocaust Survivor Memoir Project. Writing Lives was a partnership between Langara College’s English and History departments, the Azrieli Foundation and the VHEC. For the project, students at Langara College worked closely with Vancouver-based Holocaust survivors to produce their written memoirs over the course of two semesters. In the first semester, students learned the history of the Holocaust. In the second semester, students interviewed survivors, transcribed the interviews and together with the survivors, completed written memoirs. In this fonds are the memoirs, administrative files and digital photographs produced during the two-year run of the project. Seven survivors participated in the first year of the project, from 2016–2017; five survivors participated in the second year of the project, from 2017 to 2018.

Collection is divided into three series: Memoirs (2017–2018), Administrative files (2016–2018) and Photographs (2017–2018).

Louise Stein Sorensen fonds

Fonds consists of textual records, graphic materials, and artefacts relating to Louise Sorensen’s life in the Netherlands, some of which was spent in hiding. Many of the items are wartime records, including photographs and negatives, correspondence, paper currency, drawings, notice of registration, official and forged identity cards, and ration cards. Additionally, the fonds contains copies of Sorensen’s great-uncle’s daughter’s, Ans’, testimonies; several English translations of items provided by Sorensen; and a 1947 second edition of Anne Frank’s Het Achterhuis, or The Diary of a Young Girl, also known as the Diary of Anne Frank. The fonds has been arranged by the archivist into the following six series: Personal records, Family records, Photographs, Correspondence, Currency and Publications and writings.

Collection consists of six compact discs with recordings of Hakka Mountain songs and laments, sung by Mrs. Yau Chan Shek-ying in 1976, along with accompanying documentation. Documentation includes lists of recordings with song descriptions, song translations/transcriptions, a photograph and bio of the singer, and articles collected by Elizabeth Lominska Johnson. The songs were sung in an older dialect of Hakka. Song types include marriage laments, mountain songs, and funeral laments.

Hakka mountain, or Hakka hill songs, are rural songs sung in the Hakka language by the Hakka people of Southern China. The songs vary in theme/subject, and exist as a kind of oral literature and/or communication at a distance.

The collection consists of research reports collected by Iris and Jack Lieber during their time in Africa and 5 Super 8 video reel tapes were collected during their time in Papua New Guinea. The research reports were written by students at the University of Ibadan, where Jack Lieber worked as a professor in the Department of Education. Reels include footage from schools and the community in Papua New Guinea. Collection also includes two books published by Jack Lieber, and a piece of correspondence sent to him.

The collection consists of eight photographs likely taken in the Nuu-chah-nulth community in the 1920's. Some of the photographs may have been taken by Catherine, the daughter of an early Indian Agent named Augustus Cox. They include a number of images that appear to be a Samiilth or Saatlsaach ceremony, with K'aanaatla mimicking wolves. Some of these images are taken near a seaside village, which shows various types of structures and canoes. Other images taken on a beach show canoe runs, as well as two images of individuals in robes and headdresses. Another image shows a detailed view of two headdresses. There are also images of what seem to be preparations for a parade, with individuals dressed in costumes and decorated motorcars nearby.

I.O.D.E. scrapbooks

The fonds consists of scrapbooks compiled by the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, Richmond Chapter, covering the years 1947-1967 and 1967-1973. The scrapbooks chronicle the chapter's activities and interests, and provide information on the executive and members for the given years. The scrapbooks contain photographs, newspaper clippings, historical notes, event programs and memorabilia. The photographs depict IODE members, social events, parade floats, and various places in the community such as the Town Hall, cenotaph, and Lansdowne Park Racetrack.

Collection consists of a selection of of correspondence, financial records, promotional materials and other business records which document Marine Products Company's manufacturing of steering wheels, as well as the importing of raw materials, and the exporting of finished goods. Also included in the collection is a selection of Jack Lubzinski's personal records that demonstrate his interest in physics and mechanics, and his early achievements, as well as several family photographs. The records have been arranged into two series: 1. Marine Products Company business records (1951-2003); 2. Jack Lubzinski personal records (ca. 1890-2000).

Collection consists mostly of copies of photographs collected by Jack Lowe, Gerry Gilker and Dody Wray, although some original images are also included. The images document the history of Richmond’s race tracks and horse racing industry. Two cassette tapes containing recordings of Jack Short calling races are also included. The collection consists of photographs that document the British Columbia Packers Limited's widespread fishing and business operations. A local company with global interests, British Columbia Packers Limited's fish camps, canneries and plants dominated British Columbia's expansive coastline, in addition to those located on the east coast of Canada and beyond national boundaries. Taken by amateur and professional photographers, this collection of over 2000 images provided British Columbia Packers Limited with the means to communicate to its employees what was happening throughout the company. They also served a dual purpose by marketing the company and its various fish products locally, nationally and globally. The collection includes photographs of fishing boats, fish camps, canneries and plants, fishing technology, fish processing techniques, whaling and salmon in their natural habitat. It also includes a series of photographs documenting the construction of the new Imperial Plant in Steveston. Although the majority of the photographs document the fishing industry in Steveston and other areas along the B.C. coast such as Quadra Island, Skeena River, Queen Charlotte Islands, Alert Bay, Campbell Island, Bella Bella and Prince Rupert, canneries on the east coast are also represented. Taken as a whole, these photographs document the changes in fishing and canning technology within the British Columbia Packers Limited over a span of eight decades. The collection also includes photographs that reflect the property damage caused by the British Columbia earthquake of 1946 and photographs from a Klondike gold rush souvenir album from 1898.

This collection consists of the oral histories of 25 women who were born in Latin American countries and have settled in British Columbia's Lower Mainland since the 1970's. It includes 33 original sound cassettes and one set of copies of the interviews, 25 Spanish transcripts, 25 English transcripts, interviewee consent forms, and a 31-page coil-bound booklet which describes the project and provides brief biographies.

Collection consists of one series of photograph slides of British Columbia fishing boats taken at small craft harbours throughout the Straits of Georgia and the west coast of Vancouver Island in the decade between 1972 and 1982. Most of the photographs show the vessels at the dock.
