J. Lewis Sangster fonds

This fonds consists of photographs and postcards taken or collected by J. Lewis Sangster during his time spent in New Westminster, during his time traveling and during his time spent overseas during World War I. Sangster developed a large number of the photographs himself, in a small cellar in his home that was converted into a darkroom. The fonds has been divided into three series based on content: Sangster Family, Military, and New Westminster Subjects. Included in the Military series, there is a collection of Canadian Official postcards published by the British newspaper The Daily Mirror, which Sangster collected during his time serving in World War I. The family series consists of photographs taken by Sangster of his family members, as well as pictures that Sangster received from extended family members.

The fonds consists of one album of photographs taken by Sage between September 1945 and August 1946 at a relocation camp near Tashme, B.C. where she was a social worker. The photographs include general views of the scenery, individuals and groups and some smaller buildings. In addition to the camp shots, there are also pictures of Japanese Canadians preparing for relocation. The album also includes a newspaper clipping, post card and a typescript article about the Tashme Camp. The fonds also includes a small body of correspondence written by Margaret Sage to her parents Walter and Nelda Sage and to her brother Donald (1945/46).

Collection has been arranged into two series: German leaflet dropped from planes ([1939?], 1990) and Letters from the Warsaw ghetto (1938-1942; 1996).

Included is a photocopy of a copy of an original document announcing the death of Sorensen’s great-grandfather, Mozes van Dam; an original notice of registration from the American Consulate in Rotterdam, Netherlands; an official identity card for Marianne Stein (née van Dam); forged identity cards used by Sorensen’s mother, Marianne Stein, and great aunt, Jansje van Dam; and original ration cards used to receive textiles and to buy food staples like potatoes, butter, bread, milk and meat.

Fonds consists of two photograph albums containing 479 black and white photographs with captions, dating from 1916 to 1927. Most of the photographs depict family, friends and scenes from Cortes Island, especially the area known as Green Valley; some photographs show school friends and family from Vancouver and Saskatchewan. Titles in quotation marks are Dorothy Huck's photograph captions. Other information used in photograph descriptions comes from the "Green Valley", "Carrington Bay/Coulter Bay" and "Whaletown to 1930" albums created for CIMAS in 1999 by Doreen Huck Thompson, a niece of Dorothy Huck. Unless otherwise noted, the location of all photos is Cortes Island.
