Ann Messenger fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to the personal and academic activites of Ann Messenger. Activities, events and topics documented include Messenger's social and academic activities while attending college and university; her marriage to Bill Messenger; her career as an academic, including her experiences as a young professor at Simon Fraser University; and her academic activities, including her research, writings, and publications. Fonds also includes correspondence of Bill Messenger and his father, Edmund Messenger.

Records include correspondence; publications, papers, articles, and reviews; notes, assignments, and examinations; course outlines, lesson plans, and lecture and tutorial notes; typescripts and proofs; journals; photographs and postcards; applications and appointment forms; and a text book.

Collection consists of photographic prints and text labels used in the “Emergence from the Shadow: First Peoples’ Photographic Perspective” exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, from October 22, 1999 to January 6, 2002. The images depict several different First Nations groups including Haida, Kimsquit, Bella Coola, Ulkatcho-Carrier, Chilcotin, Assiniboine, and Gitksan. The label text incorporates information which Harlan Smith, the photographer, recorded at the time of creation. Labels gives name and age (if known) of the sitters as well as their lineage, employment, and style of dress.

It also contains manuscripts by students, materials related to musician and composer Michael Zilber, Department of Creative Writing administrative records as well as various UBC committee records.

Records contain correspondence, photographs, manuscripts, memoirs and ephemera dating from 1951 to 2004 relating mainly to John and Donna's work and life in England at St. Ives. The fonds is divided into five series: biographical, publications/manuscripts/articles, Leach Pottery, ephemera, and Donna Balma.

The majority of records were created by/collected by John Reeve. Some series, (specifically the "Leach School of Pottery" and "Collected Ephemera" series), are undesignated in their origin or belonged to, were created by, or maintained by both Reeve and Balma and are inseparable in their provenance. Donna Balma has her own series within the fonds, containing sketchbooks and correspondence and other records whose provenance (responsibility of origin) clearly lies with Ms. Balma.
