During their time living in Bella Bella, the Houstons took many photographs of the lives of the Heiltsuk First Nation community documenting the day-to-day lives of the Heiltsuk First Nation as well as ceremonial activities. The color slides document the construction, painting, and launching of the Gi’wa, a Heiltsuk canoe which sailed with the Lootaas, the Haida canoe built by Bill Reid for Expo 86. Some of the slides document the welcome feast at Bella Bella in honor of the Haida crew of the Lootaas. The color slides also document several potlatches and wedding feasts held in the community hall, and the local Sports Day parade. Slides also depict the role of the fishing in the community, such as smoking salmon and processing roe. Other photos document gravestones on a nearby cemetery island, derelict canneries, petroglyphs and pictographs, totem poles and house posts, all in or near Bella Bella.

The collection includes material relating to Alert Bay that was created or collected by Thomas and Mildred Laurie, as well as photographs and textual records created or received by James Barclay Williams, who bequeathed the records to Mildred Laurie. The collection includes a photo album, photographs, postcards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and a calendar. Photographs document Alert Bay and the surrounding area, including the B.C. Packers store, Christ Church, the native cemetery, St. Michael’s Residential School and Preventorium, Canada Packers, Hardy Bay, totem poles, a long house, and the Nimpkish Hotel. Photographs also document local events, including potlatches, weddings, an outdoor salmon barbeque, BC centenary celebrations in 1958, native ceremonies, and a visit by the Governor General.

It includes two newspaper clippings, one from the BC Saturday Sunset dated September 14, 1912 and another from The Globe dated Saturday March 23, 1907. The bound volumes of the Prince Rupert Empire newspaper were transferred to Special Collections. See accompanying note.

This fonds consists of photographs and postcards taken or collected by J. Lewis Sangster during his time spent in New Westminster, during his time traveling and during his time spent overseas during World War I. Sangster developed a large number of the photographs himself, in a small cellar in his home that was converted into a darkroom. The fonds has been divided into three series based on content: Sangster Family, Military, and New Westminster Subjects. Included in the Military series, there is a collection of Canadian Official postcards published by the British newspaper The Daily Mirror, which Sangster collected during his time serving in World War I. The family series consists of photographs taken by Sangster of his family members, as well as pictures that Sangster received from extended family members.

The collection consists of photographs that were collected by Francis and Lily Brown when they lived in Prince Rupert from 1911 to 1917. Some of the photographs are originals, some are postcards and others are copies of the originals still held by the family. The photographs include scenes such as Crippen Cove, the arrival of the Duke of Connaught on the Princess Alice in September 1912, blasting of areas for expanding the city, 3rd Avenue in 1911 and the arrival of the first train from Winnipeg in 1914.

The Debby Yaffe interview was conducted by Joy Fisher as a research project in the course History 358A, “Women in Canada,” taught by Dr. Lynne Marks, which covered histories of women in Canada from the era of New France to the present. Fisher’s resulting essay is entitled “Riding the Wave/ Watching the Wave: A Second Wave Feminist Talks about Gender Ideologies and her Life.”

The fonds consists of the photographs Frank Goodship took during his employment at the British Columbian newspaper. Many of these photographs were published in the newspaper. A search of the newspaper has provided additional information about these photos. In these cases, the date of the paper and the page number on which it appeared has been noted in the scope and content. The exact captions have usually not been added but all names of individuals given by the paper have been included. Please not that not all photographs are available online. In many cases, a number of simliar shots were taken for the same shoot. In these cases, the archives has chosen what it thinks the best and most representative shots. The other photos may be viewed at the archives. The fonds has been divided into five series.
