Regional Director of Area I (Cortes Island) fonds

Fonds consists of materials created or collected by Directors of Cortes Electoral Area during their terms of office. Because outgoing Directors may turn their current files over to their successors, the papers of one Director may contain materials generated during a previous term.
Fonds includes minutes of Cortes Advisory Planning Commission meetings; minutes of Regional Board and committee meetings with related background material; records of public hearings; correspondence; community plans and by-laws with associated planning material; licenses for the use of foreshore and crown land; and materials relating to island issues such as parks, aquaculture, forestry, garbage disposal, recycling and water quality.
Fonds is arranged into sous-fonds based on accession of records and contains four sous-fonds: Linda Gagnon, Regional Director; Ralph Nursall, Regional Director; George Sirk, Regional Director; and Jeanette Hiebert, Regional Director.

James Layton fonds

Fonds consists of ten diaries kept by James Layton, covering the years 1948-1981, and a Time Book. Layton made daily entries in the diaries, noting the weather, activities, social interactions and, occasionally, notable external events. Typical activities included logging, fishing, working on an oyster lease, digging clams, gardening, visiting, reading and writing letters. Times of planting and harvesting the garden, sightings of wildlife, and names of people living nearby or visiting on boats are recorded.

Holocaust Memorial Committee fonds

Fonds is comprised of administrative and other records generated as a result of the activities of the Holocaust Memorial Committee of the VHCS. The Holocaust Memorial Committee managed the building of a Holocaust memorial monument and an accompanying commemorative book project. The VHCS initiated and funded the committee’s work; its board members at the time of the memorial unveiling were Robert Krell, Leon Kahn, Dave Shafran, Freda Kaplan, Robbie Waisman, Leon Dales, Mariette Doduck, David Ehrlich, Lili Folk, Rome Fox, Paul Heller and Jack Kowarsky. Records in fonds include administrative files, inscription requests, correspondence, draft text of commemorative book, and photographs.

Fonds is comprised of family photographs, correspondence to Ruth and Leopold Hollander from relatives living in the Warsaw ghetto, travel and identification documents, research, testimony and other materials pertaining to the history of the Hollander family as Jewish refugees who fled Poland as a result of antisemitic persecution, laboured in a Siberian camp and immigrated to Africa and Canada.

Holocaust-era serials collection

Collection is comprised of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals published in Western Europe and the United States in the period leading up to and during the Second World War. Publications are relevant to Holocaust studies and education in that they demonstrate widespread antisemitism, Nazi propaganda, international responses and military and resistance activities. Serials in collection are both originals and reprints printed after the original publication.
