The records in this series cover policy, programming, financing and operational aspects of drainage works, and include signed contracts for construction and maintenance of dykes, pumphouses, drainage channels and ditches. The series includes general files which cover a range of topics and intiatives, from measurement of rain fall to the placement of drainage works. In addition, the records document the involvement of the Engineering Department in the Fraser River Flood Control Program and include separate files for Mitchell Island, dyke improvement, local improvement initiatives. and improvements to Woodwards Slough. Topics and intiatives include: applications for water main connections; policy statements and rate tables regarding water and sewer rate charges; studies into the condition and status of the water supply; complaints from the public regarding damaged fire hydrants or water mains; reports on the types, specifications, and quality of materials to be used in municipal water works; records relating to drinking water quality and the GVRD water supply study; records of the Waterworks Coordination Committee; and reports on the condition of the municipal waterworks system. The series includes applications for waterworks services from developers and individuals and detailed plans for the provision of sanitary sewer and waterworks systems. The series also includes certificates of approval for proposed waterworks services from the Provincial Health Ministry, in response to required plans submitted by the Engineering Department. The series includes files of applications for sewer outfall permits issued by the Municipal Pollution Control Board, chlorination facilities at the Gilmore Park station, as well as files relating to sewerage in certain areas such as the Airport and Sea Island, Fraser sewerage area (Hamilton-Queensborough area), and Mitchell Island/Twigg Island.
