Yoshinosuke Yoshioka fonds

The photograph collection documents Yoshioka’s transition to Canada and his life as a minister serving in the Japanese community. The majority of the collection dates from the earlier 1920s, his early days in Canada; photographs capture the life of the Japanese church community in and around Steveston and Powell Street. Fonds also includes photographs of the Yoshioka family and Rev. [Robert?] Wilkinson and his family, taken at Shizuoka, Japan, around 1917.

Al Neil collection

The collection consists of audio and moving image recordings of performances by Al Neil and various musical ensembles that performed with him (Al Neil Trio, Al Neil Jazz Probe, Al Neil Quartet, and solo efforts). They include performances at the Vancouver School of Art, Simon Fraser University, The Western Front and others. The performances date from 1962 through 1989, although this collection contains CD and DVD copies (not the original recordings).


These copies were produced as part of the Al Neil Project, a 2005 collaborative effort between the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, New Orchestra Workshop, Coastal Jazz and Blues Society and the grunt gallery.

The fonds also consists of research and notes from Letia Richardson related to the writing of the book about Charles H. Scott. Moreover, the fonds is comprised of textual and photographic records from the Glasgow School of Art and the Vancouver School of Art; two institutions where Charles H. Scott either attended or helped found throughout his lifetime.

Gary Lee-Nova fonds

The Gary Lee-Nova fonds is comprised of 20 notebooks that contain sketches, journal entries, mixed media creations, correspondence, notes on art techniques and personal artwork, and information related to exhibitions that have been created by Lee-Nova. Moreover, there are a large quantity of photographs including Polaroids of his work from the Harold Adams Innis and Herbert Marshall McLuhan Memorial Sculpture Exhibit; photographs from his work with Art City to build a kiosk and transport it to various areas in Vancouver; and a series of colour photographs from his exhibit work titled “Different points of view on some properties of media: Harold Adams Innis and Herbert Marshall McLuhan Memorial Sculpture”; and finally an acetate photograph booklet representing an art project by Lee-Nova. This fonds also contains material kept by Lee-Nova such as an article in Vancouver Magazine, an exhibition catalogue from the Glenbow Alberta Institute, and a poetry newsletter published by Vancouver monthly.

Fonds consists of audio, video, and visual materials created by Basil and Edythe Hartley. Materials include video footage of the Haisla people, which Hartley shot while working in Kitimaat from 1941-1944, a voiceover for the footage which Hartley’s widow, Edythe McClure, created in ca. 1983, a letter, and three photographs of Kitimaat people and landscapes. The three audio cassettes all contain the same 1983 recording.

The collection consists of materials gathered by Karl Ruppenthal as course aids for subjects taught mainly at Stanford University as part of the Transportation Management Program. The bulk of the collection consists of copies of transportation industry publications, published regulatory decisions and reports and related documents, and transcripts of addresses and speeches by other individuals, along with related correspondence and newspaper and magazine clippings. There are no papers in the collection generated by Ruppenthal himself, apart from copies of letters requesting materials from corporations and regulatory bodies, and some written notes. The records in this research collection were created and received by three separate juridical entities carrying out three different administrative functions. Firstly, the research collection includes records created and received by the crew of the St. Roch and other members of the RCMP and its governing body during the ships active existence. Secondly, the collection includes records that were created and received by the Vancouver Maritime Museum regarding the restoration and ongoing preservation and display of the ship. The collection also includes the records created and received by Parks Canada pertaining to the time during which that organization was responsible for the care and display of the ship. Finally this collection includes records relating to the fundraising voyage of the RCMP vessel the Nadon, during the period in which in was renamed the St. Roch II, as well as the records of the ice breaker the Simon Fraser which accompanied the Nadon on this voyage.;The records relate to the building of the St. Roch, the activities carried out by its crew members during its active career, the retirement of the St. Roch to Vancouver, the construction of the A-frame shelter, the preservation of the ship, exhibition of the ship and related items, as well as records created through research to support these curatorial activities.
