Dr. Serge Vanry fonds

Fonds is comprised of photographs, certificates, identity and repatriation cards, correspondence and photocopies of administrative records. Records pertain to the experiences of the Vanry family during the Holocaust in France. Fonds also includes photographs and a speech created as a result of Serge Vanry’s participation in a ceremony honouring his rescuers, René and Marguerite Poignard of Neuvy-en-Sullias, held in France in 2018.

Fonds is arranged into the following two series: Family records ([1942 or 1943]–1945, 2018) and Photographs (1940–[circa 1945]; 2018).

Margaret Sage fonds

The fonds consists of one album of photographs taken by Sage between September 1945 and August 1946 at a relocation camp near Tashme, B.C. where she was a social worker. The photographs include general views of the scenery, individuals and groups and some smaller buildings. In addition to the camp shots, there are also pictures of Japanese Canadians preparing for relocation. The album also includes a newspaper clipping, post card and a typescript article about the Tashme Camp. The fonds also includes a small body of correspondence written by Margaret Sage to her parents Walter and Nelda Sage and to her brother Donald (1945/46).

Klara Forrai fonds

Fonds is made up of seven photographs taken by an unknown photographer at Bergen-Belsen in 1945 and 1946, kept by Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivor Klara Forrai. Photographs depict camp exteriors, activities undertaken by Forrai and other surviving internees to remember those buried in mass graves at Bergen-Belsen and a demonstration held by internees advocating immigration to Palestine.

This fonds documents the activities of the Victoria Limners Society from 1972-2008 and includes correspondence, meeting minutes, financial records and society filings. A small number of newspaper clippings, exhibition pamphlets, various editions of a booklet on the Limners Society artists and black and white photographs showing Limner members at exhibitions and meetings can be found in this fonds. Fonds consists of multimedia materials created by Brauer as a result of her Survivors Today project, which documented the lives of Holocaust and Hiroshima survivors after the war and documented attendees at the Canadian Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and their Children held in Ottawa from April 28–30, 1985. Materials in fonds include audio cassette tape recordings of one-on-one interviews with survivors and one tape of four survivors speaking at a symposium on the Holocaust. Assorted textual materials include manuscripts, correspondence, biographies, transcripts of interviews, book proposals, publications, financial records and a matted display panel. Lastly, photographic materials in the fonds consist of negatives, contact sheets and prints produced by Brauer.

The Survivors Today project aimed to honour survivors’ recollections of sorrow while also expressing their hopes and triumphs in their new lives. Interviews focus on how survivors came to Canada, their adjustments and contributions to life in Canada, and their perceptions of Canadian society. Other topics covered include Judaism and faith, Israel, Europe, nuclear weapons and global peace.

The Indo-Canadian Oral History Collection documents the histories of immigrants from the Punjab Province of India who came to Canada between 1912 and 1938. The project was initiated by Hari Sharma, Professor of Sociology at SFU, who conducted the interviews with the assistance of a graduate student.

The interview subjects, primarily Sikhs, discuss such topics as why they came to Canada, the journey to Canada, adjustment to Canadian society upon arrival, employment in Canada, family life, and their ongoing links with their country of origin. Appendices include an interview guide prepared by Hari Sharma and an article about the project.

Ronnie Tessler fonds

The fonds consists of photographs created by Ronnie Tessler from 1986 to 1987 documenting a canoe project by the Nisga’a carver Norman Tait. The project was abandoned in the summer of 1987, and the canoe was left uncompleted. The photographs depict models for the canoe, transportation of the log for the canoe to the Museum of Anthropology, ceremonies performed throughout the project, and various stages of work on the canoe and model. Additional photographs from the same period depict a totem pole raising at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver and portraits of Les Baker, a model Tait wanted to use for a “white man” mask.

Collection consists of articles, lectures, correspondence, newspaper clippings and other textual material produced and collected by John Conway relating to the life, activity and legacy of Dr. Rudolf Vrba, a Slovak Jewish Holocaust survivor escaped from Auschwitz and associate professor of pharmacology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. Collection includes audiovisual records related to Vrba from the VHEC’s institutional holdings.

The collection consists of a memoir written in 1999 and data collected by Richard H. Yamanaka concerning the history of Japanese people in Prince Rupert from 1907 to 1942. It includes 2 computer discs and an eight-page copy of his memoir. There are also 5 photographs of Japanese people in Prince Rupert and the interior of Yamanaka's Grocery Store on 3rd Avenue West.

The remainder of the collection consists of materials collected by Boire from Caisse Populaire Maillardville Credit Union, as well as accumulated material pertaining to Boire's involvement in several community initiatives, such as the Maillardville Residents' Association, Maillardville revitalization and planning, and Place Maillardville.
