City of Richmond fonds

The fonds consists of all records of the City of Richmond, and include the full range of local government rights, responsibilities and activities. The fact that the City of Richmond is comprised of islands forming the delta of the Fraser River has resulted in dyking, drainage, and bridge building being prominent in the work and records of the municipality. In addition to bylaws and minutes of council and committees of council, other functions documented in municipal records include administration and operation of municipal holdings and services including: municipal land and buildings, roads and highways, waterworks, parks and recreation, fire and police services, public works, engineering, planning and zoning.

Fraser Street Bridge Demolition Photographs

Collection consists of seven photographs of the demolition of the Fraser Street Bridge in February of 1975 by Fraser River Pile and Dredge Limited. The slides were taken by George Yarmoluk whose office at the time overlooked the North Arm of the Fraser River.

Richmond Chamber of Commerce fonds

The fonds consists of agendas, minutes, committee reports, correspondence, bylaws, membership rosters, newsletter planning files, newsletters, scrapbooks, Canadian Chamber of Commerce publications, negatives and more than 3000 photographs, two cloth banners and three certificates. These records relate to the administration and operations of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond Board of Trade between 1948 and 1993. The majority of the photographs were taken at meetings and special and promotional events between 1988 and 1993. The records are arranged in series according to the form of material or the sphere of functional activity.

W.H. (Henry) Anderson family fonds

Fonds consists primarily of scrapbooks and photograph albums compiled by Gwen Anderson or received from various sources and all related to Henry Anderson's political career, and to the Andersons' involvement in community organizations and events in Richmond. The scrapbooks and albums document Richmond's growth and development during Anderson's time in office, and reflect the commitment both Henry and Gwen Anderson felt toward their community. Also included in the fonds are memorabilia related to Anderson's time in office, including slide photographs of various Richmond scenes, pamphlets related to events he and his wife attended, and a sound recording of opening ceremonies at the Richmond Imperial Oil service centre. These appear to have been set aside by Gwen Anderson. In addition, the fonds includes one file of ephemeral items, such as Ladner ferry tickets, unmarked ballot sheets and a building permit, and three oil paintings given as gifts to the Andersons. Fonds is arranged in four series: 1. Scrapbooks and albums; 2. Paintings; 3. Reeve Anderson memorabilia; 4. Ephemera.

Hakka Mountain songs and laments collection

Collection consists of six compact discs with recordings of Hakka Mountain songs and laments, sung by Mrs. Yau Chan Shek-ying in 1976, along with accompanying documentation. Documentation includes lists of recordings with song descriptions, song translations/transcriptions, a photograph and bio of the singer, and articles collected by Elizabeth Lominska Johnson. The songs were sung in an older dialect of Hakka. Song types include marriage laments, mountain songs, and funeral laments.

Hakka mountain, or Hakka hill songs, are rural songs sung in the Hakka language by the Hakka people of Southern China. The songs vary in theme/subject, and exist as a kind of oral literature and/or communication at a distance.

Minn Sjolseth fonds

The fonds reflects Minn Sjolseth's artistic career and travels to First Nations communities throughout British Columbia and Alaska with her husband Anthony Carter. Contents of the fonds depict First Nations cultures in British Columbia between 1960 and 1980, including Haida, Coast Salish, Kwakwaka'wakw, Gitsegukla, Kispiox, and Nisga'a. Several of the contents depict notable figures, including Chief Dan George and August Jacks.

The fonds includes textual records including correspondence, ephemera, newspaper clippings; graphic materials such as photographs, slides, negatives, and transparencies that depict Sjolseth’s travels and artworks; and artworks produced by Sjolseth including paintings, drawings, and prints.

The fonds consists of photographs, transparencies, negatives, prints, slides, textual records and objects. Contents of the fonds primarily reflect First Nations cultures in British Columbia between 1960 and 1980, including the Haida, Coast Salish (formerly Burrard Reserve), Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw), Gitsegukla and Ans'pa yaxw (Kispiox) nations. Notable First Nations personalities and artists documented include Chief Dan George, Gerry Marks, Henry Hunt and Norman Tait. Contents also include: B.C. landscapes such as Gwayasdums (Gilford Island), Klemtu, Mamalilikulla and Uchucklesaht; First Nations children; First Nations exhibits, totem poles and installations at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and for the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, Japan. The original accession was arranged in series according to Carter's published works which focus on specific localities, communities, individuals and subject matter, with additional series related to Carter's photojournalistic work and personal recordkeeping added in 2019 when an accrual was made to the fonds.

The fonds reflects the religious work and family history of Rev. George Stallworthy and his descendants. The fonds consists of correspondence and drawings related to the family's time in the South Pacific; 20 photographic portraits of family members; sermons, article reprints, and correspondence related to George Burnett Stallworthy's religious work and life; and a scrapbook containing memoranda, correspondence, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, genealogical research, and other ephemera from the Stallworthy family up to 1925.

Lorna R. Marsden fonds

The fonds consists of digitized photographs and slides taken by Lorna R. Marsden during her visit to northern Ethiopia in the late fall, winter, and spring of 1971-1972. Marsden traveled from Addis Ababa to Debre Libanos, Debre Markos, Bahar Dar, Gondar, Lalibela, Mekele, and Aksum. On this trip, Marsden purchased several objects, thirteen of which she later donated to the Museum of Anthropology in 2016. Photographs include images of buildings, landscapes, and cityscapes, historic and tourist sites, celebrations, marketplaces, objects and goods, scenes from everyday life in urban and rural northern Ethiopia, as well as other images related to or giving context to the donated objects. The photographs also show Marsden at historic sites and other locations in northern Ethiopia, with Ethiopian locals and her travelling companions, and with some of the donated objects.

The fonds consists of records created by Carol Mayer at the University of British Columbia as Curator of Collections and Curator of Ethnology and Ceramics at the Museum of Anthropology, as a Department of Anthropology & Sociology Instructor, as Curator of Africa/Pacific, and as Curatorial Department Head. Also included are records relating to her role within the MOA Exhibition Committee. The fonds also contains records related to her role as an instructor at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. Mayer, Carol

Beverley Brown fonds

The fonds consists of 478 photographs, predominantly of students at the St. Michael’s Residential School in Alert Bay. Beverley Brown and her friends took the photographs between ca. 1937 and ca. 1945 using Brown’s camera. Photographs from this period include shots of the students with their friends and of social events, as well as posed class photographs. These class photographs were taken by school supervisors who subsequently sold the prints to other students. Other photographs were taken in Brown’s hometown, Bella Bella, and in the area of the Namu cannery. These show weddings, fishing boats, landscapes, and buildings. Peter Mason Sr., Brown’s father, had the photographs developed in Vancouver.

The collection consists of research reports collected by Iris and Jack Lieber during their time in Africa and 5 Super 8 video reel tapes were collected during their time in Papua New Guinea. The research reports were written by students at the University of Ibadan, where Jack Lieber worked as a professor in the Department of Education. Reels include footage from schools and the community in Papua New Guinea. Collection also includes two books published by Jack Lieber, and a piece of correspondence sent to him.

Fonds consists of material related to the art, research, and writing of Hilary Stewart. The bulk of the material is related to the production of her books on the culture and art of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. The remaining material relates to illustrations that she did for publications by other authors, a small amount of material done for personal use, and collected research and ephemera that does not appear to be related to one specific publication. Material includes original illustrations, collected research and notes, book drafts and pre-press materials, photographs, correspondence, and collected memorabilia.

Hilary M. Stewart

Nuu-chah-nulth Photograph Collection

The collection consists of eight photographs likely taken in the Nuu-chah-nulth community in the 1920's. Some of the photographs may have been taken by Catherine, the daughter of an early Indian Agent named Augustus Cox. They include a number of images that appear to be a Samiilth or Saatlsaach ceremony, with K'aanaatla mimicking wolves. Some of these images are taken near a seaside village, which shows various types of structures and canoes. Other images taken on a beach show canoe runs, as well as two images of individuals in robes and headdresses. Another image shows a detailed view of two headdresses. There are also images of what seem to be preparations for a parade, with individuals dressed in costumes and decorated motorcars nearby.

Fonds consists of negative images of petroglyphs largely from the Pacific west coast of North America. Most of the images are from sites located in British Columbia, but there are also images from sites in Washington State, New Mexico, and other areas of the United States and Mexico. There are also images of artifacts, masks, totem poles, wood carvings, and graveyards. Images of family travels, landscapes, wild animals, and house cats are interspersed within the collection.

The correspondence includes several letters to and from missionary G. Hopkins.
