Denis Johnston collection

The collection consists of Johnston's second typescript draft (as finally rejected) of "Shadowdance", later called "The Old Lady Says No!", with holograph corrections by W.B. Yeats and others. Also included are photocopies of several early drafts of this play, including the aforementioned. In addition, there is the author's proof copy, with corrections, of "The Brazen Horn, Lenaea 5" (1968) [probably for 2nd ed. 1969, amended to Lenaea 6]. The fonds also consists of correspondence from Denis and Betty Johnston to Bill and Mary Harbold from 1973-1982; a signed photograph of Johnston; photocopies of book reviews and book chapters re Johnston; a copy of Nine Rivers from Jordan with final corrections; and a copy of the libretto of Nine Rivers from Jordan.

Hal Lawrence collection

The collection consists of audio tapes of 120 interviews that Lawrence conducted between 1980 and 1990 with naval personnel, several female officers and ratings. Fonds includes several interview transcripts, correspondence relating to one interview, a captain's night order book (HMCS Portage), and the text of an address. The additional fonds consist of manuscripts for books and articles written by Hal Lawrence, correspondence, clippings and photographs related to his navel career. The fonds also include personal and professional documents and correspondence, navel oral history material, several navel maps and transparencies, miscellaneous publications and ephemera. The collection consists of letters and postcards (1940-1951) written by Levertov to Charles Wrey Gardiner (editor of Poetry Quarterly); letters, drafts of poems and a postcard (1946-1947) to John Hayward; and drawings not used for "A Tree Telling of Orpheus", 1967. The letters also mention Dannie Abse, Herbert Read and Kenneth Rexroth.

The collection consists of: 1) Four vellum leaves by various calligraphers taken from a Flemish Psalter, two French Book of Hours, and a French Bible. 2) Ten manuscript leaves by various calligraphers in France, England, Italy, and Spain, including leaves from a Bible, a calendar, Missals, a Book of Hours, a charter, a litany from a Book of Hours, a Psalter, and a Breviary. 3) MS of John Lydgate's "Fall of Princes" (ca. 1431-1438). 247 slides were made for a digitizing project, from which 10 CDs have been produced plus a backup set. There is also a CD for the index to the web site. 4) MS of "Bartholomaeus Anglicus" (ca, 1240-1250), consisting of extracts from his encyclopaedia "De Proprietatibus Rerum (On the Properties of Things). 5) Medieval Fragments: 13th Century Collection (ca. 1200-1300), consists of 7 folia fragments from 5 sources most were recovered pastedowns from later books. 6) Manuscrit religeuse. 7) Court record from the beginning of the reign of James I. It passed through private hands. The document is in Latin court hand and notes the transfer of land from Thomas and Robert Whitney to a knight. 8) Handwritten letter to William Paston from Thomas Jermy dated 31 January 1565. The letter has been repaired, with a slight loss of text. Also included are a photocopy of the letter; a typed transcription of the letter, made in 1974 by H.L. Douch (Curator of the Royal Cornwall Institution) and amended at the suggestion of Jean M. Kennedy (City and County Archivist, Norwich), together with comments by Kennedy and Dorothy Sweet; a handwritten transcription of the original, by Douch; handwritten notes and background material by Sweet; two typed, signed letters to Sweet from Kennedy.

Wyatt, writing from India, to his wife, Jane, "Jeanie" in Aberdeen. There are 77 letters plus a note: "Maude's Battery at the Relief of Lucknow 25 Set. 1857. By Lt. Col. M.E.S. Laws. OBE. M.C. R.A. (ret'd.) Taken from the R.A. Journal, July, 1953", 6 pp. The second is "Military Memories: Part I. First World War,1914-19; Part II. Mesopotamia, Egypt, Turkey, 1919-23; Part III. Royal Air Force, 1923-28; Part IV, Second World War 1938-1945 by W. F. A. Preston, Major late Royal Artillery, Newmarket, Ontario, 1965." 137 pp.

The collection consists of letters written by Forster to Randall. They concern, firstly, his trip to Rumania, where he stayed with the Randalls; a tour in France in 1928; and his journey home. Later letters include references to such literary people as Herbert Read, Harold Monro and T.S. Eliot, plus a mention of reading James Joyce's "Ulysses". He also refers to his visit to Africa and his sentiments about the Spanish Civil War and W.W.II. Most of the later letters are signed "Morgan".

The collection consists mostly of correspondence from Russell about his social and literary activities. The vast majority of this correspondence is to William K. Magee. There are a few letters to Charles Weekes, Robert Graves, and Miss Buxton. In addition, there is a letter from AE's son Diarmuid Russell to Magee re Magee's proposed biography of AE and a photocopy of a letter (transcript) to Judge Richard Campbell from Dudley Digges re Campbell's broadcast "Farewell to AE". Other materials include a few clippings about AE (obit etc.) and an undated b/w photo of AE.

The collection consists of manuscript material, consisting of a carbon typescript, corrected of "An Explanation" (being the preface to Shaw's edition of the Shaw-Ellen Terry correspondence); a manuscript of "Motives of Socialism"; and marked proofs for "Shaw Speaks on War" (a transcript of a short wave broadcast in 1937). Also included is correspondence with Elbridge Adams, Hubert Bland, William Archer, William J. Pickerell, and Harold Laski, together with correspondence from Janet Achurch to Hubert Bland. There is also a small amount of ephemera.

The collection consists of mainly of correspondence. Most of the letters are from Dylan Thomas to John Lehmann, David (Tennent ?), G.V. Roberts and Clifford Dyment. Also included are letters from Daniel Jones and Vernon Watkins to (G.V.?) Roberts and from Denys (Kilham Roberts?) to Lehmann. The letters relate to personal activities and various literary matters. The other material is ephemera: a b/w postcard of the Augustus John portrait of Dylan Thomas, and a clipping of Thomas' obit. from The Tenby Observer and Country News, Nov. 18, 1953.

The collection consists of six items:
1) En'am-i Serif [Turkish calligraphic manuscript].- consists of several chapters of the Qur'an, Arabic and Ottoman and Turkish prayers, calligraphic rondels and seals, hilyes, and miniature paintings of the Kaba, the Prophet's Mosque at Medina, his personal belongings such as his cloak, prayer beads etc., his hand and foot print and similar images. Special Collections had slides made of this manuscript. A second set of these slides is available in the Slide Library (History in Art Dept.).

2) al-Jazri, Mohammed. - consists of a single leaf from an 18th century religious manuscript, "Hassi Hasin" (Prayer and Contemplation). It is written in Arabic (probably in Turkey) in the Nashki hand. It may be an Ishmaeli text. It is illuminated, gilded and decorated with a floral motif.

3) Firdawsi. Shah Nameh. consists of a single leaf from an 18th century copy.

4) Koran. India. 17th -18th century?

5) Koran. China. 17th -18th century?

6) Maghribi Qur'an (Koran) Bifolium. Late 10th or 11th century. Kufic script.
