The collection consists of nautical charts created by over forty institutions, including the Canadian Hydrographic Service, the Admiralty Hydrographic Office, the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office, the Danish Hydrographic Office, the London Board of Trade and the British East Indian Company. The largest number focus on waters around British Columbia, along with a number of surveys charting the coast of Alaska. The collection also includes charts, including Admiralty charts, of water of the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. The collection also contains LORAN charts, meteorological charts, fleet reviews and shipwreck charts.

The collection consists of photographic prints and negatives of maritime activity (predominantly vessels and ships crews) occurring in North America, the largest percentage relating to the West Coast. The collection includes photographs of maritime vessels of World War I and World War II vintage, Royal Navy vessels, and naval officers.

The collection consists of ship's plans predominantly of vessels on the West Coast of Canada, including ships constructed and repaired at shipyards of Yarrows Limited (Esquimalt, B.C.) and the Victoria Machinery Depot. Many of the plans were received from these two firms. The collection includes plans of Canadian Pacific Princess and Empress ships.
