British Columbia Conference, Native MinistriesThe Land Claims Campaign was a five year project launched by the BC Conference in May 1991. It had the dual purposes of education and fundraising in support of Aboriginal land claims in the province. Education events addressed questions of land claims and self government. A fundraising goal of one million dollars was set with money raised used to provide grants to BC First Nations to assist with research, political negotiations, legal fees and other related land claims costs. Campaign funds were held in trust and dispersed on the recommendations of the Native Ministries Council of BC Conference (formerly known as the “Coastal Regional Group”); recipients included the Gitksan and Wet’suwet’en for their Supreme Court Case, Delgamuukw v. British Columbia.
