Custodial history

The bulk of the collection was assembled by Helen Dawe over many years. Some textual records, photographs and artifacts were donated to her by family members, local residents and businesses. After her death in 1983 her sister, Mrs. Billie Steele, took charge of the collection and continued to add to it. It was donated by Mrs. Steele to the Sechelt Council and placed in the Helen Dawe Room in the new Sechelt Library building in 1996.

Scope and content

The collection consists of documents, etc. concerning Sechelt and District's development and growth, residents' remembrances of early life on the Sunshine Coast and Helen Dawe's family history. The collection consists of 29 series and includes notes by Helen Dawe, correspondence, printed material, business records, government reports, Sechelt Council and other organisations' minutes and reports, photographs, maps, and plans, oral history tapes, slides and films, scrapbooks, books, newspapers, and local newspaper microfilms, artifacts and ephemera.
