        History

The Hayward family were undertakers in Victoria. Charles Hayward was in Stratford, England in 1839. He emigrated to Victoria in 1862 where he opened a contracting business, expanding later into sash, doors and fancy millwork which included the manufacture of coffins. He entered the undertaking business in 1870 with the B.C. Funeral Furnishing Company. He was also active in public life, serving as an alderman, school commissioner, and Mayor of Victoria (1900-1903). His sons followed similar careers, Ernest establishing an electrical contracting business and Reginald succeeding his father as director of the undertaking business. The family also controlled the St. James Hotel in Victoria.
