Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society Archives
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society was formed in 1986 after working more than a decade to save the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894. It had been selected in 1977 by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada as the most suitable location to commemorate the West Coast fishing industry. The Archives is the responsibility of the Society's Collections Committee and acquires records of enduring value generated by persons and businesses during operations of the fishing industry of the West Coast. Holdings include cannery ledger books from several fishing companies, private photograph collections related to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, almost 4,000 images on slides and prints donated by the Fisheries Council of Canada, manuals, photographs and textual material for machinery of the early salmon canneries, marine charts, and minute books, ledgers, photographs and textual material donated by the Canadian Fishing Company.
