History
The Grindrod Community Club was established July 19, 1948 with ten members. Its purpose was to promote community involvement in sporting, recreational, charitable, educational and social activities in the village of Grindrod. The first actions of the organization were to establish seed money for Grindrod Sports Day, write a letter to public works requesting improved drainage of the main street, write a letter to the Grindrod Farmers Institute requesting a herd law for Grindrod townsite, and establish a committee to look into creating a playground and skating rink and picture shows. In the 1960s the name was changed to Grindrod Recreation Commission, to become a part of the province-wide initiative to establish sports programs with provincial funding. Over the years the association hosted events for Canada Day, Sports Day, Christmas and Halloween, and community pot luck suppers. They promoted youth groups, skating and sports teams. The group was responsible for maintaining and overseeing the use of the Grindrod Hall. The name was changed to Grindrod Recreation Association in 2003 and a new constitution and by-law were accepted.
