Biographical history
Godfrey Baldwin was born in England and first came to the Campbell River area in the 1930s with his brother Chambre. Both of the Baldwins worked as seasonal sportsfishing guides. After serving overseas during World War II, Godfrey took a photo finishing course in Vancouver through the DVA. In 1948 Godfrey and his wife May moved to Campbell River and established a photography studio which they operated until Godfrey's death in 1964. While a resident of Campbell River Godfrey was involved as a news photographer for the Campbell River Courier newspaper, was the official expansion photographer for Crown Zellerbach's Elk Falls Mill, documented hydro development in the region and on occasion undertook investigative work for the local RCMP detachment. May, as well as being involved in their photography business, was an active member of the community and, for a time worked as a newspaper correspondent for the Campbell River Courier newspaper.
