    Biographical history

George Samuel Hanes (1882-1957 ) was a City Engineer for Windsor and North Vancouver, a Mayor of North Vancouver, a World War I veteran, and an M.L.A. for North Vancouver. He was born in 1882 in Olinda, Essex County, Ontario, and received his engineering education from the University of Toronto's School of Practical Science, graduating in 1905 with the degree of bachelor of science. In 1906, he was made the Engineer for the City of Windsor, Ontario. He married Ella Douglas in 1907, and the couple had three daughters, Evelyn, Marion, and Dorothy. In 1909, he was made the Engineer for the City of North Vancouver, moved to the city, and remained in this position until 1912. In 1913, Hanes was elected Mayor of the City of North Vancouver, and was re-elected in 1915 and 1916. By 1916, he entered provincial politics and was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) for North Vancouver, serving in this capacity until 1924. In 1918, Hanes served as a lieutenant with the 9th Battalion of the Canadian Engineering Regiment (within the Canadian Expeditionary Force) in Belgium and France, where he took part in the push at Amiens. Hanes left the provincial Legislature in 1924, and returned to his position as Engineer for the City of North Vancouver, remaining in this position until 1936. Also, as of 1926, Hanes served as a consulting engineer for the Burrard Inlet Tunnel and Bridge Company. In 1940, he was appointed engineer-in-charge of the construction of the R.C.A.F. equipment depots #2 and #11 in Calgary. In 1942, he was appointed senior assistant engineer on the staff of the District Engineer Officer of Military District No. 11, British Columbia, where he supervised construction of military defense works at Prince Rupert, Tofino, and Port Hardy. In 1943, he was made Engineer for the City of Prince Rupert, a position which he held for two years. Hanes' wife, Ella, was a long-time member of St. Andrew's Church, a life member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Lions Gate Hospital, and a member of the Canadian Daughters League. She passed away in 1990 at the age of 102.
