Fonds - George Bryce fonds

George Bryce was born in 1903 in Bathgate, Scotland. In 1927, he came to Canada aboard the ship "Athenia" and worked at the Granby, Northfield and, lastly, No. 10 South Wellington mines. After the mines closed, Bryce worked as a bookkeeper at Adirim's Junk Yard and then as a driver for Criterion Cleaners. Bryce was the Secretary-Treasurer of the United Mine Workers of America, Nanaimo Local 7355. Later, he was the Secretary-Treasurer of the Nanaimo Local of the Beverage Dispensers and Culinary Workers. Bryce kept this position until he retired. In 1935, Bryce married Mildred Knowles who was born in Nanaimo in 1912. They had three children: Georgina Beryl (b. 1938) and twins James Robert and Arthur George (b. 1949). Bryce was a City alderman in the 1950s and 1960s and active in the Nanaimo Soccer Association. He served on the board of the Vancouver Island Health Unit and was instrumental in bringing the Victorian Order of Nurses to Nanaimo. Bryce was also a member of the Doric Lodge of the Freemasons. Bryce died in July 1979.
