Biographical history
The Fruit Growers Mutual Insurance Company, based in Kelowna, was incorporated by the British Columbia Fruit Growers Association in 1955 to sell automobile and general insurance to Association members. Later it also sold crop and life insurance. In the late 1960s, the company managed the British Columbia Fruit Growers Mutual Hail Insurance Company. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia purchased the Fruit Growers Mutual Insurance Company in 1974.
Custodial history
The Fruit Growers Mutual Insurance Company retained custody of the records of the British Columbia Fruit Growers Mutual Hail Insurance Company when it was liquidated in 1970. When the Fruit Growers Mutual Insurance Company was purchased in 1974 by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, the records were incorporated into the ICBC fonds as a series.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of minutes of the Board of Directors meetings and of annual general meetings, contracts for reinsurance, some client files, which contain copies of automobile insurance coverage issued by the Fruit Growers Mutual Insurance Company to clients in the Kelowna, B.C. area, a file of job definitions, and three ledgers for the period 1968 to 1974: insurance ledger (1968-1974); general ledger (1972-1974); and a record of claims paid, reconciled, outstanding and incurred (1970 and 1974).
