    Biographical history

Ethel Bruce was born in Dublin County, Ireland, and started her newspaper career in London, where she was the publisher of "The Queen" and "The Field". She came to Canada about 1910 as a special correspondent for Britannia and taught school for a time in the Okanagan Valley. She began writing for the Victoria Daily Times in 1911. In 1917 Bruce switched to the Daily Colonist, where she edited a weekly motor page, interviewed theatrical and musical people, had charge of all musical and most dramatic reviews, reported mining congresses, agricultural conventions, temperance and women's meetings and military affairs (World War I). She retired in 1941. Ethel Bruce was an active member in many civic and women's organizations. She died in Victoria.

    Custodial history

    Scope and content

The fonds consists primarily of the records of Ethel Bruce including newsclippings, concert and theatre programmes, invitations, pamphlets, maps, photographs, correspondence and picture postcards. These papers document Miss Bruce's career as a writer for the Victoria Daily Times and the Daily Colonist, especially in her role as music and theatre critic, her extensive travels, social activities, family relations and her work in organizations such as the Women's Institute. A small portion of the fonds consists of the records of Ethel Bruce's sister, Maude Bruce, primarily correspondence inward.
