Biographical history
Ernest Christopher Dowson, who was born in Kent, England, was an English poet, short story writer, and translator of French authors. From a life of misery and squalor, he produced poetry on themes of love and lost childhood. The mood of unfulfilled longing which permeates his work , along with his recklessly unhealthy lifestyle, exemplifies what Yeats called the "tragic Generation". Dowson was an influence on Yeats' early work and is frequently associated with the 1890's fin de siècle or decadent period in literature. His early poetry appeared in such publications as "The Yellow Book" and "The Savoy". His short working life was divided between living in England and France. He died in London.
