Biographical history

The Enderby and District Arts Council was established as a group under the umbrella of the Enderby Recreation Commission in 1991 to host a community art show in July 1991 and to research the possibility of a community theatre. It was incorporated under the Societies Act on December 13, 1991. Its purpose is to "initiate, encourage, coordinate, and support the development of artistic projects and activities in Enderby and District, and to provide opportunities for the community to be educated in the work of the artists of the community." For the next ten years the council sponsored an annual art show and co-sponsored an annual fall variety night, the Winter Gala, which was initiated by the Enderby Recreation Commission. As membership grew, so did the programs and projects. The council hosted workshops and concerts, supported community events and mural projects and provided scholarships and honorariums for local artists. Local arts and cultural organizations joined as member groups and many applied for funding under the arts council umbrella, including the Enderby & District Community Play Project, the Wild Wallflower Mural Project, and Enderby in Bloom. In 2007 the executive applied for and received funding through the B.C. Arts Council, a reflection of the expanded programs, events and membership.
