Biographical history

Mary Elizabeth Keeling, known as Elizabeth, was born on July 22, 1907 in Ladner, B.C. Elizabeth was orphaned at a young age and raised by her aunt and uncle in New Westminster, B.C. After high school, Elizabeth attended the Toronto Conservatory of Music and played the piano and organ. Elizabeth eventually returned to British Columbia and attended the Vancouver Normal School where she earned her teaching certificate. In 1950, Elizabeth moved to White Rock, B.C. Elizabeth Keeling was active in the arts and in a variety of community groups such as the White Rock Choral Society, White Rock Overture Concert Association, Peace Arch Weavers Guild (now housed in the Hooser Weaving Centre in South Surrey), and the World Craft Council. Elizabeth Keeling passed away on September 16, 2002.

The fonds consists of records related to Elizabeth Keeling's involvement with the White Rock Arts and Crafts League, summer painting programme, White Rock Museum/Archives Society, White Rock Historical Society, Hal Painter Tapestry Workshop, United Nations Association, White Rock Branch of the B.C. Rheumatism Society, and the White Rock Overture Concert Association. There are some records from the White Rock and District Council of Women, White Rock Night School Planning Committee, White Rock International Festival of Strings, and White Rock and District Community Arts Council. Records include correspondence, newspaper clippings, receipts, reports, financial statements, correspondence, and notes. There is some ephemeral material such as background information on Arnold Mikelson and various photographs of Elizabeth Keeling and others at different community and private events.
