Dr. Robert Neill Young was born in 1931. He attended Oak Bay High School and then Victoria College before moving on the UBC where he earned a BA in 1952 and a MD in 1956. Dr. Bob, as he become known through the 1150 Info Health columns he wrote for newspapers across BC and later throughout Canada. The columns, which first appeared in 1975, were designed as a forum to discuss topical medical issues and were part of the BCMA’s public relations program. Dr. Young contributed much to the BCMA. He was the President of the Section of General Practice in 1969, edited the BCMA News for 20 years, and chaired the Communications Committee. In 1988 he was the first recipent of the BCMA’s Dr. David Bachop Medal, given in recogintion of his extraordinary contribution in the field of organized medicine and community service. In February 2011, at UVic, he was honoured as the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for the Division of Medical Sciences. Dr. Young passed away in May of 2011, he was 80.
