Biographical history
Dr. Frank Turnbull was born in Goderich, Ontario in 1904. After receiving his B.A. at U.B.C. in 1923, he went to medical school at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1928. He was an intern at Toronto General Hospital, working with the pioneer Canadian neurosurgeon Dr. Kenneth McKenzie. Upon returning to British Columbia, he worked at the Vancouver General Hospital from 1933 to 1965, a term broken only by his service overseas from 1944 to 1945. He also served as a consultant for the Provincial Mental Hospital, Shaughnessy Hospital and the Worker's Compensation Board and was president of the Canadian Medical Association (1964-1965), British Columbia Medical Association (1954-1955), Vancouver Medical Association (1945-1946) and several neurological associations.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of reprints of scholarly articles, 1927-1985, speeches or papers presented by Dr. Turnbull, 1935-1985, survey sheets from a 1974 CMA Medical History and Archives project, and research notes pertaining to the development of the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Includes reprints and speeches pertaining to medical subjects such as cancer, neurology, neurosurgery, state health insurance, pain and afflictions of the brain. Also includes a series of correspondence and memoranda relating to Dr. Turnbull's observations about the fee-for-service method of payment for medical care and records pertaining to his association with the Osler Society.
