    Biographical history

Doric Lodge No. 18 Ancient Freemasonry and Accepted Masons (A.F. and A.M.) was formed in 1892. In that year, a petition was sent to the Grand Master of Nanaimo Ashlar Lodge to request permission to form a second lodge. The charter was granted on June 23, 1893. In the early years, the meetings were held at the Freemason's Hall at the corner of Skinner and Commercial Streets (Nanaimo). There were several reasons for the formation of a new lodge: Nanaimo was growing rapidly, Ashlar Lodge was overcrowded and could not accommodate new members, and there were a number of Freemasons in the area who would not join the older Lodge. Ralph Craig, a carriagemaker and Past Master of the Ashlar Lodge, became the first Worshipful Master of Doric Lodge No 18. Other charter members included S.B. Yuill, A. Haslam, W.H.S. Perkins, M.R. Counter, F. McBain Young and Neil McCuish.
