The Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives is operated by the Cowichan Historical Society. The society was incorporated in 1974 and began operating a museum in the summer of 1978. The museum's first permanent site was established in 1981 in the basement of Duncan City Hall. The Museum opened in its present facility, the former Duncan Train Station, in June 1989. The museum and archives acquires artifacts, archival records, and historical reference material (including newspapers) relating to the Cowichan Valley. The Archives moved to the 3rd floor of Duncan City Hall in April 2007.
