Biographical history
The Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce was formed at a preliminary public meeting on June 10, 1963. Previously there had been several attempts at a Board of Trade or Chamber, but none survived. The 1st executive was: President - E.T. McBride, Vice President - Don Braithwaite, Treasurer - Joe Reilly. They registered as the Lake Cowichan Chamber of Commerce on Dec. 11, 1946, pursuant to the Board of Trade Act. At some point the group seems to have disbanded. From 1958 - 1963 local members belonged to the Duncan - Cowichan Chamber of Commerce. On May 7, 1963 a vote was taken in favor of the Lake Cowichan Merchant's Association forming a Lake Cowichan branch of the Chamber of Commerce. Name officially changed on July 26, 1967. This Chamber is still functioning and runs the Travel Info Centre and is active in various events including Lake Days.
