Biographical history

The Coal and Petroleum Control Board was established in 1937 by the Coal and Petroleum Products Control Board Act (SBC 1937, c. 8). The creation of the board was the result of a recommendation by the Coal and Petroleum Products Commission (1934 to 1937) to the Pattullo government. The mandate of the Coal and Petroleum Control Board was to regulate and control the coal and petroleum industries through licensing and to gather and report statistics on the marketing of coal and petroleum products. The chairman of the board from 1937 to 1949 was W.A. Carrothers, followed by D.K. Penfold (acting), and Percy E. George. In 1951, under the Hart government, the act was amended, repealing most of the boards mandate. Those functions were transferred to the Public Utilities Commission. The board was disestablished in 1953 under the Coal and Petroleum Products Control Board Act Repeal Act (RSBC 1953, c.9).
