Biographical history

The Clayton Community Association was incorporated as a society on December 31, 1922. The oldest surviving constitution of 1952 defines as its objects "to promote social and recreational activities, to cooperate with organizations with similar objectives, and to operate and maintain the building known as Clayton Community Hall." In the early years of its existence, the activities included the organization of recreational and fundraising events in the hall, such as dances, and the administration of the hall as a rental facility for parties, dances, Bingo, and other events. When the first hall burned down in 1960, funds were raised for a new hall which was built entirely by volunteers in 1961 and stands on land which is leased from the City of Surrey. Beginning in the 1970s the association became involved in local development issues and operated as advocate for the community with the municipal government in areas, such as drainage, taxation, zoning, and community planning. The association continues to be active.
