    Biographical history

Charles Van Norman was a graduate of the University of Manitoba and came to Vancouver in the late 1920s. He worked briefly under Townley and Matheson before starting his own architectural practice in 1930. Van Norman's early work included a variety of buildings, mainly residential, for prominent businessmen such as General McRae and H.R. MacMillan. In the years after World War II, Van Norman also did many commercial plans for department stores, schools, and prefabricated houses (in some cases for the Veteran's Land Act). He was involved in the design of many of the Park Royal Shopping Centre stores, as well as the Powell River Company's housing developments.
