    Biographical history

    Charles Hayward was born at Stratford, Essex, England. He came to Victoria in 1862 and began work in the contracting business. He later entered the undertaking business in 1867, later founding the British Columbia Funeral Furnishing Company. He was also involved in mining, building, and manufacturing interests. Hayward also served in public life as an alderman (1873, 1874, 1899) and mayor (1900-1902) for the municipality of Victoria and also as chairman of the School Board. Hayward also gave his time to charitable organizations including the B.C. Protestant Orphanage and the Children's Aid Home. Hayward was married to Sarah (nee Chesney) with whom he had a number of children.
