Biographical history

The earliest Methodist work began in Chilliwack ca. 1865 and by 1870, the Methodist church began holding camp meetings on property near the Chilliwack River. These annual revivals attracted both Indian and white participants and Methodist work spread throughout the Chilliwack area. In South Chilliwack or Sardis, as it became known, worship services were held in homes. In 1896, it was decided that a proper church was needed. Thus, Carman Methodist Church was formally opened on December 4 and dedicated on December 11, 1898. A Sunday School hall was added ten years later. In 1925, with church union, Carman Methodist Church became Carman United Church. The church building was moved to a location closer to the centre of the village of Sardis in the following year. By 1957, the population in the Sardis area had grown and it was decided that a new building was needed. The new building was dedicated on October 21, 1958. In 1988, a new wing was built to provide more program and office space. From 1898 to 1912, both Carman Methodist Church and Chilliwack Methodist Church shared one minister. From 1925 to 1969, Carman United Church was a three point Pastoral Charge with Cultus Lake United Church and Sumas United Church. Sumas United Church closed in 1971.
