The Nanaimo branch of the Canadian Pony Club was certified in 1973. The objectives of the club were to encourage young people to ride and instruct youths in good horsemanship. The clubs promote high standards in sportmanship, self-discipline and horse care and provide opportunities for members to compete in various standardized events. In the late 1980s, a splinter group formed the Quennell Branch in Cedar.
