    Administrative history

Canadian Memorial United Church was formed in 1925, from predecessor congregations. Fairview Methodist Church (1900-1904) became Sixth Avenue Methodist Church (1904-1923), and amalgamated with Fourteenth Avenue Methodist Church (1910-1923) to form a Canadian Memorial Chapel congregation, which entered church union in 1925. This congregation first met in their Community Centre (dedicated 1923), until the church sanctuary was opened in 1928. This church was founded, mainly through the efforts of the Rev. (Lt. Col.) George Fallis, for the cause of world peace, and as a memorial to those who served in the First World War, 1914-1918. It was known as Canadian Memorial Chapel for many years after Church Union. Considered a church of national significance, it is the only place besides the Peace Tower in Ottawa that houses the Books of Remembrance, which list the Canadian war dead of the First and Second World Wars.
