History
Born in Ireland, H.J. Cambie came to Canada in 1852. He worked for Grand Trunk Railway until 1859. He joined the staff of Sir Sandford Fleming in first reconnaissance for the Inter-Colonial Railway. In 1857 he started exploration of the Chilcotin country, seeking a route for the railway to Bute Inlet. In 1876 he was appointed district engineer in charge of company surveys in B.C. His survey from Yellowhead Pass to Port Moody determined the railway route through the lower reaches of the Fraser. In 1879 he was a member of the party to survey in the north a complete survey of a third great railway route from the Prairies to the Coast. In 1880, in laying track though Fraser Canyon, Cambie was in charge of Emory Bar - Boston Bar, then Savona - Shuswap Lake. He was appointed engineer, Pacific Division, Canadian Pacific Railway Company. In 1903 he moved to Vancouver. In 1921 he retired.
