Biographical history

Clement Fisher Costerton was born in 1857 in Suffolk, England, sixth child of fourteen. He came to Canada on a sailing ship in 1881 via Cape Horn, landing in New Westminster. He worked as an agent for the CPR in Yale, then bought a general store in partnership with William Dodd in Lansdowne in 1883. In 1889, he is listed in the B.C. Directory as a farmer and storekeeper in Enderby. Records for 1892 indicate that C.F. Costerton Ltd. was in business in Vernon as a notary public, real estate agent, and insurance agent. He married Effie Catherine Gibbs in 1894, and had three sons and a daughter. He was a member of the Lansdowne Masonic Lodge, as well as being an alderman in Vernon. Mr. Costerton was elected mayor of Vernon in 1921, serving until 1923. He died in 1930 in Vernon. His business carried on under his name until 1938, when his son-in-law changed the firm name to A.E. Berry Ltd. Mr. Berry managed the firm until his son-in-law, Mordin Hoyte, took over as manager in 1963. Mr. Hoyte's son, David Allan Hoyte has been manager of A.E. Berry since 1990.
